Current Year 12 Students

A Step-by-step Guide to Applying for On-Campus Study at UNE

Step 1: Prepare

There are two aspects to your preparation. Firstly deciding which courses you would like to study, and then checking that you are likely to be able to meet the requirements for that course.

Choosing a course can be overwhelming, but there's plenty of help at hand. Try our course search or talk to your careers adviser. Call UNE to check whether there are any subjects you could take in Year 12 to prepare for the UNE courses that interest you, and to find out the conditions of admission for each course.

You can also refer to guides published by universities admissions centres – UAC and QTAC. Attend as many open days as possible or take part in university visits organized by your school. You can also come to our campus at any time – if you contact us in advance, we will try to tailor a tour to suit you.

Once you know the courses you would like to study, check the entry requirements. As a guide, find out what this year's ATAR/OP cutoff scores were for the course that interests you.

An ATAR or OP score is a ranking based on the number of students who wish to study that particular course and the number of spaces available. This demand changes year to year, so there is no precise way to predict what the cut-off point will be for the courses you are  interested in until the whole application process has finished. You can, however, get a general idea by looking at the cut off marks for the previous year. You can also convert your OP score.

UNE's course descriptions will also tell you whether you need any course prerequisites or assumed knowledge.

Aim high, but be realistic about the score you are likely to achieve, as this will help the application process run smoothly for you. Now is also the time to explore alternative entry options offered by UNE – such as Early Entry. Many of our most successful graduates have come through these programs. You need to apply for most of these by the end of September for entry in the following year.

Step 2: Lodge an Application Through UAC or QTAC

All current Year 12 students apply to UNE through the Universities Admissions Centre in your state (UAC for NSW/ACT students, QTAC for Queensland students). If you are a Year 12 student elsewhere in Australia, you can lodge your application through the NSW Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Your marks will be converted into a ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) equivalent, so that your application can be assessed on the same criteria as others.

You can place up to nine course preferences on your application in NSW, and six in Queensland. List the courses in your order of preference, starting with the course you would most like to study. Your list can be a mix from different universities. It's important to use the correct course code from the UAC or QTAC Guide.

Your careers adviser can assist you with this process, or check out the UAC or QTAC web sites. You can also contact UAC or QTAC by phone.

The closing date for both UAC and QTAC applications is at the end of September. You will have opportunities to change your preferences after you have submitted your application. You can submit an application after the closing date, but a late fee applies.

Please check here for current closing dates.

Step 3: Lodge Applications for Alternative Entry (if applicable).

If you are also applying via UNExtra Early Entry, you will need to submit that application through your school by the end of September. Remember to lodge your UAC or QTAC application as well.

September is also the time to apply for one of the excellent scholarships offered by UNE to provide you financial support with your studies.

Step 4: Receiving and accepting an offer

Now all your hard work can be rewarded.

If you've applied for Early Entry we will contact you in late November to advise whether you have been successful. If your application is successful, you secure your place in the UNE course by having it first on your list of preferences with UAC or QTAC.

From mid-December onwards, UAC and QTAC begin making offers to successful applicants. There are several rounds of offers. You will receive one offer for the highest eligible preference on your application. UAC and QTAC publish the offer timeline on their web sites.

If you are offered a place, you will receive information explaining how to accept your offer and enrol.

Step 5: Arrange accommodation

Many on-campus students stay in one of the UNE Residences to enjoy support with their studies and the opportunity to participate in a range of activities. Residences fill quickly, so apply for a place as soon as you know you're coming to UNE.

We can also tell you about other accommodation available in Armidale.

Step 6: Enrol

Enrolling at UNE is easy - you can do so online through our student portal facility, myUNE.  UNE will send you information that guides you through this process, as well as information about accommodation and opportunities to attend University induction courses.

Your first week at University will begin with the UNE Orientation Program in February.

We're here to help.  At any stage of the process, contact us for advice and information.

How to Apply if You're an International Student Studying Year 12 in Australia

You are considered an international student if you are not a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, or if you do not hold an Australian Permanent Residence visa.

If you are an international student studying for Australian Year 12 qualifications, either in Australia or overseas, you will need to apply through the Universities Admission Centre in NSW (UAC) or Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC).

As well as meeting the academic requirements for being admitted to UNE, you will also need to provide documentary evidence of English proficiency.

If you are qualified academically but need additional English language training, the UNE Language Training Centre provides intensive courses in English for academic purposes.

For more information about visa requirements, fees and other advice contact the UNE International Office.
