Current Year 12 Students
UNE can help make your transition from school to university as smooth as possible. Here's some information to get you started:
A Step-by-step Guide to Applying to Study by Distance with UNE
This guide will step you through applying to study by distance with UNE. (There is a different process for applying to study on campus.)
Step 1: Prepare
There are two aspects to your preparation. Firstly deciding which courses you would like to study, and then checking that you are likely to meet the requirements for that course.
Choosing a course can be overwhelming, but there's plenty of help at hand. We publish an extensive list of UNE courses — most of our programs are available for study either on campus or by distance, but check the individual course descriptions. You can also refer to guides published by universities admissions centres — UAC and QTAC
Once you know the course(s) you would like to study, check the entry requirements. Some UNE courses have additional requirements, such as work experience or legal restrictions. You'll find this detail in the course description.
If you're currently in Year 12, your application will still be assessed on the basis of your UAI, OP or equivalent. Check what this year's cut-off scores were as a guide.
Now is also the time to explore alternative entry options offered by UNE many of our most successful graduates have come through these programs.
Step 2: Lodge an application directly to UNE
If you want to study by distance with UNE, you send your application directly to us. There is no application fee.
Make sure you include originals of any documents you need to substantiate your application.
Closing Dates
Please check here for current closing dates.
Step 3: Receiving and accepting an offer
Now all your hard work can be rewarded.
If your application is successful, we will send you information before your course commences with full details on how to enrol for individual units. This information will come from The Student Centre. Register as soon as you can, to ensure that you get a place in the units you'd like to study each semester.
Step 4: Book for residential schools (if applicable)
When you receive your registration package, you will also be given full details about any compulsory or optional residential schools for particular subjects within your degree. It is a good idea to register for these and arrange accommodation as soon as you can.
Anytime: Have your questions answered
We're here to help. At any stage of the process, contact us for advice and information.
How to Defer Your Studies
If you are offered a place at UNE, you might be able to defer your enrolment for up to two years. Write a letter outlining why you want to defer. Include as much information as possible to substantiate your request. Send the letter to the Student Centre, The University of New England, NSW 2351.
How to Upgrade Your Qualifications or Transfer Between Degrees at UNE
Once you've enrolled at UNE, you may find you wish to change your mode of study (eg. from on campus to distance education, part-time to full-time). This is usually as simple as completing a variation of enrolment form and submitting it to the Student Centre.
You may be able to complete a unit of study from another Faculty or University as part of your study at UNE. The Student Centre can advise you on what authorisations you need to arrange in advance.
Many of UNE's diploma programs are structured so that you can smoothly move into a directly related higher degree. Contact the relevent the Student Centre to make arrangements.
To change to a different degree or program, you will need to compete alongside other students on the basis of your academic results in the studies that you've already completed at university. For more information, contact:

How to Apply if You're an International Student Studying Year 12 in Australia
You are considered an international student if you are not a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, or if you do not hold an Australian Permanent Residence visa.
If you are an international student studying for Australian Year 12 qualifications, either in Australia or overseas, you apply directly to UNE if you want to study by distance.
If you are an international student studying for Australian Year 12 qualifications, either in Australia or overseas, you will need to apply through the Universities Admission Centre in NSW (UAC) or Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC).
As well as meeting the academic requirements for being admitted to UNE, you will also need to provide documentary evidence of English proficiency.
If you are qualified academically but need additional English language training, the UNE Language Training Centre provides intensive courses in English for academic purposes.
