Tafe and College Students
Contents
You may already be well on the road to a qualification from UNE. For a number of courses, you can start your studies at TAFE then enter a UNE program at an advanced level. Another option is to enter a UNE program at an advanced stage by receiving credit for studies you've completed at TAFE or a college.
A Step-by-step Guide to Applying for On-Campus Study at UNE
This guide will step you through applying to study on campus at UNE. (This process is different to the one you follow to study by distance.)
Step 1: Prepare
There are two aspects to your preparation. Firstly deciding which courses you would like to study; and then checking that you can meet the requirements for that course.
The choice can be overwhelming, but there's plenty of help at hand. Try our online course search or refer to guides published by universities admissions centres — UAC and QTAC. Attend as many open days as possible (UNE's is in early September) or visit our campus at any time — if you contact us in advance, we will try to tailor a tour to suit your interests.
Contact us to find out whether you might be able to enter a UNE program at an advanced level, through TAFE-UNE.
Now is also the time to explore UNE's alternative entry options. Many of our most successful graduates have come through these programs.
Step 2: Lodge an application through UAC or QTAC
You apply to study on campus at UNE through UAC in NSW or QTAC in Queensland. (The application process is different if you want to study by distance with UNE.)
If you are not a Year 12 student, you apply by completing form B of the UAC Guide, or QTAC's Tertiary Study Application form. The Year 12 student edition of the UAC Guide does not include a Form B. You can purchase a Guide with a form B from newsagents, or direct from UAC. You can apply through QTAC online or using the Tertiary Study Application Form in the QTAC Guide.
You can place up to nine courses on your application in NSW, and six in Queensland. List courses in your order of preference, starting with the program you would most like to study. Your list can be a mix from different universities. It's important to use the correct course code set by UAC or QTAC.
Your careers centre can assist you with this process, or checkout the UAC or QTAC web sites.
Closing Dates
Please check here for current closing dates.
Step 3: Receiving and accepting an offer
Now all your hard work can be rewarded. UAC and QTAC begin making offers to successful applicants from January. There are several rounds of offers. You will receive one offer for the highest eligible preference on your application. Full details of the offer timeline are available on the UAC and QTAC web sites.
If you are offered a place, you will receive information explaining how to accept your offer.
Many on-campus students stay in one of the UNE Residences to enjoy support with their studies and a great lifestyle. Places fill quickly, so apply for accommodation in the Residences as soon as you know you're coming to UNE.
Step 4: Enrolling
Enrolling at UNE is easy - you can do so online through our student portal facility, myUNE. UNE will send you an information package that guides you through this process, as well as information about accommodation and opportunities to attend University induction courses.
Your first week at University will begin with the UNE Orientation Program in February.
We're here to help. At any stage of the process, contact us for advice and information.
Credit for Previous Study
You may be able to get your degree sooner than you think. Your previous studies or work experience may give you advance standing or credit towards your degree. This will reduce the amount of time you need to study.
Combining Your TAFE and UNE Studies
Several UNE degrees are structured to include or complement your TAFE NSW studies. Some require the foundation studies to be conducted in TAFE. Others allow you to enter the degree course at an advanced stage. With some courses, you can be enrolled in both TAFE and UNE at the same time.
There are several qualifications that you can complete partly at TAFE, and partly at UNE.
Advanced Standing at UNE for TAFE Courses
There are many TAFE NSW awards and subjects that will give you automatic advanced standing at UNE. To confirm this advance standing and ensure that you receive the maximum possible credit points, contact us before making your application.
To apply for credit for studies you have undertaken at another tertiary institution contact the Student Centre.
How to Defer Your Studies
If you are offered a place at UNE, you might be able to defer your enrolment for up to two years.
To defer your offer – go to:
http://yourfutureaskune.custhelp.com/app
and login or register to create an account.
Then click ‘contact us’
An email form will open.
Write a letter outlining why you want to defer. Include as much information as possible to substantiate your request.
We need to receive this email no later than the date on which your offer of admission is due to lapse.
How to Upgrade Your Qualifications or Transfer Between Degrees at UNE
If you already have a qualification from UNE or another university, you may be able to enter a higher degree program with advance standing. For example, if you have a diploma in a particular subject area, you may be able to progress smoothly to a degree with just a few extra subjects. To see if this may be possible, contact us to discuss your particular circumstances. If your qualification is from another university, you will still need to apply through UAC or QTAC. If your qualification is from UNE, you simply need to apply to the the Student Centre.
Once you've enrolled at UNE, you may find you wish to change your mode of study (eg. from on-campus to distance education, part-time to full-time). This can be done online through myUNE.
You may be able to complete a unit of study from another Faculty or University as part of your study at UNE. The Student Centre can advise you on what authorisations you need to arrange in advance.
Many of UNE's diploma programs are structured so that you can smoothly move into a directly related higher degree. Contact the Student Centre to make arrangements.
To change to a different degree or program, you will need to compete alongside other students on the basis of your academic results in the studies that you've already completed at university. For more information, contact the Student Centre.
