Regardless of your age, you can apply to study at UNE. The knowledge and experience you have gained through life and/or work may well stand you in good stead to succeed at university.
A Step-by-step Guide to Applying for On-Campus Study at UNE
This guide will step you through applying to study on campus with UNE. (There is a different process for applying to study by distance).
Step 1: Prepare
There are two aspects to your preparation. Firstly deciding which courses you would like to study, and then checking that you are likely to be able to meet the requirements for that course.
Choosing a course can be overwhelming, but there's plenty of help at hand. Try our online search to find a course to suit your career direction or interests. You can also refer to guides published by Universities Admissions Centres — UAC and QTAC. Attend as many open days as possible (UNE's Open Day is in early September). You're welcome on campus at any time — if you contact us in advance, we will try to tailor a tour to suit your interests.
You then need to check whether you are likely to meet the entry requirements for the course(s) you are interested in. Locate any records such as matriculation from school or results from study or qualifications that you may have completed after finishing school. These will all come in handy for substantiating your application.
Now is also the time to explore UNE's alternative entry options. Many of our most successful graduates have come through these programs.
If you will need to sit for a Special Tertiary Admissions Test, it helps to plan and register early.
UNE’s Oorala Centre offers Indigenous applicants an effective and supportive point of contact throughout the application process.
If you have an overseas qualification and you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident, contact us for advice before applying.
Step 2: Lodge an application through UAC or QTAC
You apply to study on campus at UNE through UAC in NSW, or QTAC in Queensland.
Please check here for current closing dates.
You will have opportunities to change your preferences after you have submitted your application. You can submit an application after the closing date, but a late fee applies.
Step 3: Receiving and accepting an offer
UAC and QTAC begin making offers to successful applicants from mid-December (or in mid-June, if you're applying for mid-year intake). There are several rounds of offers with the main round not occurring until mid-January. You will receive one offer at a time for the highest eligible preference on your application. Full details of the offer timeline are available on the UAC and QTAC web sites.
If you are offered a place, you will receive information explaining how to accept your offer.
Step 4: Organise advance standing or course credits
Now is the time to apply for credit or advance standing for any studies you've completed elsewhere that may be relevant to your new program at UNE. Click here for information to assist you in determining what qualifications UNE recognises for entry into our courses.
Step 5: Arrange accommodation
Many on-campus students stay in one of the UNE Residences to enjoy support with their studies and the opportunity to participate in a range of activities. Places fill quickly, so be sure to apply for accommodation in the Residences as soon as you know you're coming to UNE.
Step 6: Enrol
Enrolling at UNE is easy - you can do so online through our student portal facility, myUNE. UNE will send you an information package that guides you through this process, as well as information about accommodation and opportunities to attend University induction courses.
Your first week at University will begin with the UNE Orientation Program in February.
We're here to help. At any stage of the process, contact us for advice and information.
How to Defer Your Studies
If you are offered a place at UNE, you may be able to defer your enrolment for up to two years.
To defer your offer – go to:
http://yourfutureaskune.custhelp.com/app
and login or register to create an account.
Then click ‘contact us’
An email form will open.
Write a letter outlining why you want to defer. Include as much information as possible to substantiate your request.
We need to receive this email no later than the date on which your offer of admission is due to lapse.
How to Get Credit Towards Your Degree From Previous Study
You may be able to get your degree sooner than you think. Your previous studies or work experience may give you advance standing or credit towards your degree. This will reduce the amount of time you need to study.
To apply for credit for studies you have undertaken at another tertiary institution contact the Student Centre.
To help us assess whether credit can be given, send the following with your letter:
- An academic transcript and syllabus of the courses you completed at another tertiary institution
- Your UAC number
- Name of the UNE course for which you are applying

How to Transfer From One Program to Another Once You're at UNE
If you already have a qualification from UNE or another university, you may be able to enter a higher degree program with advance standing. For example, if you have a diploma in a particular subject area, you may be able to progress smoothly to a degree with just a few extra subjects.
If your qualification is from another university you will still need to apply through UAC or QTAC, and then apply to the Student Centre. If your qualification is from UNE you simply need to apply to the Student Centre.
Once you've enrolled at UNE, you may find you wish to change your mode of study (eg. from on-campus to distance education, part-time to full-time). This ican be done online in myUNE.
You may be able to complete a unit of study from another Faculty or University as part of your study at UNE. The Student Centre can advise you on what authorisations you need to arrange in advance.
Many of UNE's diploma programs are structured so that you can smoothly move into a directly related higher degree. Contact the Student Centre to make arrangements.
To change to a different degree or program, you will need to compete alongside other students on the basis of your academic results in the studies that you've already completed at university.
