Networking with fellow distance education students
UNE works hard to support and facilitate communication between students and staff online with discussion boards and multiple email lists for the distribution of information through the university community.
We believe that discussion is one of the best ways to learn – but we also want to enable our distance education students to network with their fellow students as much as possible.
myUNE
Within the blackboard component of myUNE you will find a discussion board for each subject and often one for the general area you are studying.
While most of the discussion will be around your assignments, reading and exams, most will also have a social introductions or chat thread. Don’t be shy – introduce yourself and start chatting.
UNExtra and Kate UNE
UNExtra is UNE’s own social networking platform. There are groups for current students here so you can chat with other students socially.
You can also find Kate UNE on most social networking platforms such as facebook or MySpace. Kate is your virtual contact to UNE. She is mainly there for potential students of UNE, and is friends with current and past students too.
A large number of UNE students are on Facebook, where you will find many groups of current and past students, including two distance education groups and a number of subject specific groups. Have a look through the groups that Kate UNE is a member of to find a group that suits you.
Some students choose to start new facebook groups for their year – be sure to invite Kate UNE so that other students can find it easily.
Networking Events
Some subjects will hold networking events, often associated with intensive schools. These will usually be organised using the discussion boards in Blackboard or your lecturer will email you.
