Languages and Cultural Studies at UNE

Why study Languages and Cultural Studies at UNE?

UNE offers you a gateway to the diverse languages of Europe and Asia including Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. Languages are taught by experienced staff with national and international reputations in their fields of expertise and research.

Cultural Studies includes a range of subjects in European and Asian Cultures and Literature. The latter is a fascinating and challenging area of study, where you will have the opportunity to explore major novels, plays and films from Asian (Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese) and European (English, French, German, Italian) cultures (all in translation). European and Asian Cultures and Literature can be studied in combination with a range of subjects, being a perfect complement for units in Media and Communications, English, History, languages, Music, and Theatre and Performance.

Bachelor of Languages

If you want to acquire a thorough knowledge of one or more languages and a deep understanding of their culture, the Bachelor of Languages could be for you. Learning a language can also give you a competitive edge in the global workforce. You will have the opportunity to study for a year in the country of your chosen language(s) as part of your degree. This is an exciting opportunity to experience another country in a way that a tourist never could, while making friends, learning about other cultures and expanding your general knowledge and language skills.

UNE has formal study agreements with a range of overseas universities in cities including Angers and Saint-Etienne (France) and French-speaking Quebec City (Canada); Guilin and Xi'an (China); Oldenburg and Trier (Germany); Graz and Klagenfurt (Austria); Macerata (Italy); Hiroshima, Kagoshima, Nagoya, and Tokyo (Japan). These agreements allow tuition fees to be waived, and help is given with finding accommodation, including an element of pastoral care. Some financial assistance is available in connection with study at some of these universities.

Bachelor of International Studies

The Bachelor of International Studies is will give you a broad grasp of contemporary international economics, diplomacy, social change, politics, culture, communication and globalisation. Students then undertake more specialised studies in one of several areas, including political and international studies, peace and development studies, international history and world religions featuring Islam. The optional language study included in the course allows for a choice from Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian and Japanese. Students also have the option of undertaking the Bachelor of International Studies (Advanced) degree, which involves an additional year of study at a partner university.

Bachelor of Languages and International Business

The Bachelor of Languages and International Business will equip you with the skills and knowledge to work both in Australia internationally in a business or commerce context. Students spend a year in the country of the language they chose as their major, with one semester of academic study at a partner university including in China, France and French-speaking Canada, Germany, Austria, Italy and Japan, where tuition fees are waived.

This is followed either by one semester of work placement or an additional semester of academic study. There is also some financial assistance available in connection with study at certain partner universities. Students have the opportunity of completing a business work placement overseas, in the country of their target language.

Bachelor of Chinese Language and Business Studies

This degree combines business studies with Chinese Language (Mandarin) and culture studies to prepare students for a career conducting business in or with China. This unique combination of business, language and culture will also prepare you to take on a role as a future manager with leadership responsibilities and provide you with a valuable qualification in the Asian business world.

There is an option, after completing the three year course, for students to enrol in a fourth year Bachelor of Advanced Chinese Language and Business Studies which involves 12 months at a UNE partner in China allowing students to immerse themselves in Chinese society.

Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) gives you the flexibility to tailor a unique degree to suit your individual interests and strengths. You can choose to study Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish as your major in the degree. The BA is for students looking to enhance their career prospects and personal interests by acquiring a range of analytical and communication skills. The Bachelor of Arts course provides the skills of independent thinking and cultural awareness that underline the creation of an equitable, humane and innovative society.
