Why study English, Writing, Media and Communications at UNE?
These programs have a long and well-established tradition of excellence at UNE; English has been taught since the University was founded in 1938. We pride ourselves on our rigorous and creative approaches to literature, to reading, and to writing. As well as the core units that make up the heart of the English major at undergraduate level (in the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Media and Communications), we offer a range of interdisciplinary units that encourage you to understand more about the cultures and contexts that produce literature and writing. We also train you in practical writing, with an eye to your future career.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) gives you the flexibility to tailor a unique degree to suit your individual interests and strengths. The BA is for students looking to enhance their career prospects and personal interests by acquiring a range of analytical and communication skills. The Bachelor of Arts course provides the skills of independent thinking and cultural awareness that underline the creation of an equitable, humane and innovative society.
At UNE you will combine an initial broad range of study by choosing units from four or more subject areas, before specialising in those areas that you find of interest.

The Bachelor of Media and Communications, and the related majors within the Bachelor of Arts, offer a balance of academic and vocationally relevant education. They provide a flexible approach to media and communications, covering digital media and internet studies; the changing role of film, television and print media; and studies in writing, editing and publishing.
You can explore units on new media, Australian and international film/television including features and documentary, news media, advertising, rhetoric and persuasion, popular culture, children’s media, writing in different genres, including non-fiction, media-based, and professional writing.
