Your First Degree
If you haven’t done any study at university before then you are an ‘undergraduate’.
Your first degree is usually a bachelor, eg. Bachelor of Arts. However there are also diploma options available if you don’t want to commit to a full degree just yet. These diplomas can count towards a degree later on.
Choosing which degree to do can be easy for some and very hard for others. If you know what you want to do, go straight to the ‘Course and Unit Catalogue’ and search for your degree. If you are not sure, go to ‘What should I study’ for some advice.
There are plenty of people around to help you with choosing what to study. Talk to your teachers, careers advisers and parents - or go and talk to people working in the area you are interested in and ask them what they would recommend you study.
Once you have chosen the degree you want to study, you need to apply directly to the University.
If you are completing year 12 but do not qualify for a ATAR (formerly UAI) or equivalent you can still apply to go to UNE based on your school’s recommendation through the UNExtra Early Entry program.
Remember, you can change programs if you think you made a mistake or if something else captures your attention once you start your studies.
If at any time you need advice or get a bit confused by university jargon – just call the student centre on 1800 818 865.
