Living in Armidale

Armidale lies in the heart of the NSW Northern Tablelands, halfway between Sydney and Brisbane on the New England Highway, and just two and a half hours from the coast.

Being the best of the city and country combined makes Armidale the perfect place to live.

Entertainment, food and shopping requirements through to sporting, recreational and cultural pursuits are well provided for locally as well as all essential services.

Almost all new students choose to live in one of UNE’s residential colleges, which are the cheapest and best option. However, if college is not an option for you because you are coming with family, there are plenty of other options in town.

You will find it is much easier to get rental accommodation in Armidale than if you were looking in the city. Being a University City with a large student population, landlords here are generally welcoming of student tenants. However, if you are looking to rent a property directly from a real estate agent you should contact them as soon as you can as the good properties are always snapped up early.

Accommodation information is also available from Services UNE for students who are seeking off campus housing. Housing is available in private board, share houses, houses and flats.

As a general guide rents are approximately:

  • $75-$110 for a bedroom in a shared house
  • $110-$200 for a single bedroom unit
  • $180-$300+ for a 3 bedroom or larger house.

Armidale has a large number of retail outlets dealing in affordable/ second-hand furniture.

Note that there are very few units and properties to rent commercially within walking distance of the University campus. Edwards Coaches run bus services from town to the University. However, if you do not have a car or access to one, you will find it much easier to live in college.
