Affording to return to full time study

Making the decision to return to study is a big one, and your financial position is something that should be taken in to consideration. Unlike people who have just finished school you are more likely to have substantial financial commitments and resources.

Check with Centrelink to see what benefits you are entitled to. Write down in a budget all of your financial obligations and income to see if you can still meet them just with Centrelink benefits. Part time or casual work is available both on campus and in Armidale to either supplement or instead of Centrelink benefits.

If you are moving to Armidale to study by yourself, consider living on campus as a much cheaper alternative to setting up a house in Armidale.

If you do opt to set up a house or flat, remember to budget on what your income will be, not what it is now. You may need to downsize the lifestyle slightly – but the rewards will be worth it.

If you already live in Armidale, make sure you can continue to afford your current lifestyle on a potentially substantially reduced income.

There are lots of discounts available for students to make living a bit more affordable. You should also check out scholarship and other funding options.

To help you work out a budget Student Assist has compiled this budget guide including the costs of studying at University. Student Assist can also provide advice and assistance should you find yourself in financial difficulty.
