What should I study?

The million dollar question… What should I study?

You should study what interests you and what you are good at. That’s probably not much help to you, but students always do better and enjoy their time at UNE more when they are studying something that is interesting to them.

So when you are trying to decide what degree to do, think about what you like doing and what you are good at. Not just in school subjects either, but everything you like doing in your life.

If you like…

·         a good argument, watching the news or thinking about how the world works
->      Think about studying law or humanities

·         getting involved in running a sporting team or community group
->       then perhaps something in management would be good for you

·         money and business
->       think about economics, accounting or commerce

·         watching people or helping friends with their problems
->       try psychology or social work

·         knowing about the body
->       consider health science, nursing or medicine

Then of course there are the more obvious ones – if you like farming
->       study agriculture.

Start by browsing the different discipline areas to get a general feel for what you will learn, what degrees cover that area, and what you can do with those degrees.

The course and unit catalogue is a big online database of all the subjects and degrees you can do at UNE if you want to do a more detailed search. The database will allow you to search for specific subjects - if you find yourself thinking ‘that might be good’ for a few of them, then have a look at which degree program is linked to those subjects, and that’s your degree.

If there is something you are interested in doing and you can’t figure out which degree would cover that area, or would be needed to work in that area, then just ask the student centre or careers adviser for help.

Don’t forget: you can change your mind. You can change degrees and majors fairly easily once you are already studying at UNE.
