Preparing to return to study
Returning to study after a break can be daunting, but we have plenty of people and tips to make it a little easier on yourself.
The biggest thing you will need to do is alter your schedule to fit time in for study. You should allow 10 hours per week for each subject you do – this includes class time if you are studying on campus. You can start getting ready before you start your degree by setting aside ‘study time’ for reading or other activity. This way you will get in to the habit of studying.
You can also try and make things a little easier on yourself by using the holidays to prepare for your next semester’s units. Get the textbooks early so you can get ahead on reading, download and print any helpful documents, other readings or previous year’s exam papers, or get ahead on other activities so you have more free time for study during the semester.
tUNEup from home is an optional on-line learning support service for students who may not be confident about studying or writing at university and who would like to do some preparation at home before embarking on their studies. It is targeted specifically to students who may have been out of the educational system for some time and would like to 'tune up' their skills.
The Student Assist Counselling service also has a range of great fact sheets and self help tips for surviving and succeeding at study.
