Alternative Entry Pathway

Alternative Entry Pathway - a unique opportunity offered jointly by the
University of New England and the University of Sydney.

Applications open in June and close at the end of September.
Successful applicants may be eligible for a UNE Sponsored Place grant worth $10,000.

If you have ever thought about going to University but thought it was beyond your reach, consider this unique opportunity offered jointly by the University of New England (UNE) and the University of Sydney that recognises your potential to succeed at University, even if you don’t expect to receive an ATAR.

The UNE Alternative Entry Pathway relies on your school’s carefully balanced assessment of your ability to cope with study at university, rather than your ATAR (or equivalent) score.

The assessment is based around your personal attributes, such as your ability to work and learn independently, as well as your overall potential for academic success at UNE. Your School Principal will complete the recommendation and rank you on a number of attributes and abilities, which will be used to assess your suitability for university.

Who can apply?

Current, full time Year 12 students who do not intend deferring and who are eligible for Youth Allowance may apply. Places are awarded on the basis of your school’s recommendation about your potential for success at university, regardless of your final exams.

How does it work?

Successful applicants will study the first year of their degree at the University of New England, where they will benefit from small classes and plenty of academic and community support. In year two of their degree students will transition to the University of Sydney, provided they have achieved the agreed academic standard in all Year 1 units (48 credit points) in UNE equivalent awards in their first year of study at the University of New England. The University of Sydney will provide additional support to facilitate a soft transition into Year 2.
