What's happening?
UNE is running two open days this year, so that students and parents have the option of attending either day. The days are aimed at different audiences however.

Friday 4 May 2012
The Friday ‘Schools Extravaganza’ as the title suggests, is themed to students currently in Years 11 & 12. It will be a huge day with heaps of cool activities, entertainment, giveaways and exciting demonstrations. They will have the opportunity to check out courses that may be of interest to them, meet the lecturers, and get a feel for campus life. They can take a tour of the UNE learning, living and sporting facilities, and meet existing students. In other words, Friday is the day to explore UNE and find out everything they need to know to make an informed decision about their future.
Activities
There will be a number of activities on Friday including:
- Free breakfast in the college
- Academic advice
- College and Campus Tours
- Free games and entertainment
- Demonstrations
- Course advice and information sessions
- Free Lunch
Saturday 5 May 2012
Saturday is an informal day aimed to cater for students who wish to study by distance education, Postgraduate students, prospective students who can’t make it to the Friday Open Day, and to parents who may want to delve a bit deeper into what university will offer their son or daughter.
Attendees can participate in Campus, college and sporting tours and ask questions in a more personalised relaxed atmosphere.
Activities
Saturday activities include:
- Distance Education seminars
- A parents’ Q and A session
- Postgraduate information sessions
- Free morning tea and lunch
Accommodation
- Due to the implementation of trimesters at UNE, there will be no accommodation available for School groups in the UNE Residences.
- The University has secured accommodation locally for your school. Availability is limited, so please contact your UNE School Liaison Officer for more details.
- Please remember that it can get quite cold in Armidale - the average minimum overnight temperature in May is only 2C degrees – so make sure you dress warmly.
- Accommodation subsidies may be available, please contact the Schools Liaison Officers to discuss.
Further Educational Activities
If you are looking as spending a few days in Armidale, there are plenty of education-related activities that your students can experience - most are free of charge.
- New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM)
Some of the most important works in Australia including the famous Hilton and Coventry collections are housed here. NERAM can bring a first-hand visual experience to your students' art education by making the Gallery available to you and your students throughout the year. Just two doors up from NERAM is the Museum of Education. The Museum of Education consists of two original 1880's school buildings (Pallamallawa and Dumaresq) and a post WWII portable building from the Armidale High School. Each schoolhouse is furnished with authentic school furniture, books, teaching aids and photographs. Armidale's Museum of Education is considered to be the most comprehensive collection of educational material held in any university or public collection, and has been designated of national significance. Mount Yarrowyck Reserve's Aboriginal cultural walk is a three kilometre return track, which will take you along the granite slopes of the mountain to the cave painting site. It is a fascinating insight into the heritage of the region. Search online for Mount Yarrowyck for more information. - The waterfalls and spectacular gorge country
Within a 15 minute drive of Armidale, you will discover the amazing gorge country and waterfalls. Dangars Falls, situated in the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, is easily accessible from Armidale, and features awe-inspiring views. 40kms North of Armidale on the Waterfall Way is Wollomombi Falls - the second highest falls in Australia. - Bushwalking
An hour's drive east of Armidale is Cathedral Rock National Park, which offers great bush walks. Nearby is the wild and rugged New England National Park, where you can walk amidst Snowgums, Banksia or Antarctic Beech forest. The views from Point Lookout on a clear day are simply breathtaking. - Heritage Tours
Armidale offers free guided tours of the city's unique attractions. - McCrossin's Mill, Uralla
Situated in Uralla (20km South of Armidale) is McCrossin's Mill, now a gallery, which focuses on the unique history of the region including 'Thunderbolt' the bushranger, the wool industry, gold mining (including a replica Chinese joss house) and an aboriginal diorama.
How to get to UNE
UNE is situated in Armidale, NSW on the picturesque New England tablelands, midway between Sydney and Brisbane.
Drive: By road, UNE is around 6 hours’ drive from Sydney and Brisbane on the New England Highway and 2 ½ hours from the NSW Mid-North Coast on the Waterfall Way.
Fly: Qantaslink has several flights to and from Armidale each day.
Rail: The CountryLink Explorer runs between Sydney and Armidale daily and offers discounts for student passengers.
Bus: There are a range of options for bus travel Sydney - Armidale and Brisbane - Armidale, including Greyhound Pioneer, McCaffertys and Edwards Coaches, Armidale. There are also bus links between Armidale, the Mid-North Coast and Hunter Valley.

- How do we pre-register?
Pre-registration can be completed by using the form located at www.une.edu.au/openday. By pre-registering, your students have access to catering, events, and Open Day bags. Registration will be available on the day, but to avoid queues, pre-registration is strongly advised. - How do we book accommodation?
Accommodation can be booked by speaking with your UNE Schools Liaison Officer, or by emailing study@une.edu.au - What accommodation is available?
UNE has secured accommodation in Armidale for visiting school groups. Please speak to your UNE Schools Liaison Officer for further details. Unfortunately, there will not be accommodation available to visiting school groups in the UNE Colleges as it is during the UNE lecturing period. - How do I arrange travel subsidies?
Travel subsidies can be arranged by pre-registering your School Group using the form at www.une.edu.au/openday. Upload your students' first and last name in a PDF, Excel or Word document when prompted. UNE will only be providing subsidies to schools who pre-register, not individuals. An invoice must be provided post-event to facilitate payment. Breakfasts can be reserved by completing the form at www.une.edu.au/openday and selecting the 'breakfast option' - Where do we park coaches?
There will be special event parking in place for coaches for the duration of Open Day. Maps will be supplied closer to the event – please visit www.une.edu.au/openday for updates. - What will the weather be like at that time of year?
The weather forecasts of the previous 10 years give an average maximum temperature of 16.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum average temperature of 2.4 degrees Celsius. Be sure to pack lots of warm clothing just in case, as it can become quite cold in Armidale. Armidale is renowned for having 'four seasons in one day'. - Where can I get further information?
