Helping your students choose what to study
Being careers advisers you may already be aware that many students may not know what course would best suit their interests or career aspirations. Giving them the right advice and leading them on the way to a quality education that will contribute positively to their career pathways is an important role to fulfil.
Here at UNE we understand the uncertainties students feel when faced with actually choosing what to study and that is why we can assist you in the process of helping students to match their careers to the courses offered here at UNE.
One of the most important parts of helping your students to choose what is right for them is that they select courses that truly interest them and what they are good at. You may already be aware of the areas you students are excelling in or have shown an interest in. Encourage them to study courses that they like – that will help them realise their career dreams, and allow them to enjoy and excel in their time here at UNE.
Make sure that when helping them to choose a course, your students also take into account what interests them in everyday life, not just what interests them and what they do well in their school subjects. A good start to matching careers and interests to courses is by browsing through our discipline areas section. This will enable you to get a general idea of what degrees are offered in that particular discipline, what students can learn and where it could lead them into their careers.
If your students already know what discipline area they want to study in, then our online courses and unit catalogue will provide a full list of all courses offered at UNE which will provide further detailed information to career pathways, subjects that will be required to study, the full program of study and entry requirements.
However, it is also important to advise your students that once they are already studying at UNE, they can switch degrees and majors quite easily if they still face some uncertainties about what to study or if they just change their mind.
If you are still are unsure as to what courses should be recommended to your students, or where a particular degree may lead to, then feel free to contact the student centre for assistance.
