Exemptions for Residential Schools

Compulsory Residential Schools

If you do not attend a compulsory residential school and you have not been granted exemption, you will be withdrawn from the unit. Withdrawals after Census or after the last date for withdrawal without academic penalty will incur the HECS liability and/or the academic penalty.

Applying for Exemption from a Compulsory Residential School

Applications must be made in writing and sent to: The Student Centre, University of New England , NSW 2351 . You must state clearly the grounds (see the Guidelines below) on which your exemption is sought and you must include supporting evidence.

Guidelines for Exemption from Compulsory Residential Schools

  • Exemption may be granted only in cases where the circumstances preventing your attendance at a compulsory school were unforeseeable at the beginning of the unit concerned (that is after the commencement of teaching in the semester), and where independent documentary evidence is provided to support the request (eg: medical certificate, statement from police in cases where flooding prevents road travel, statement from NRMA in cases of vehicle breakdown, statement from employer where previously approved leave to attend a school is subsequently revoked).
  • The exceptions to the above rule are:
    • If you re-enrol in a unit that you had previously failed or from which you have previously withdrawn, and have already satisfactorily covered all or a significant portion of the work to be set for the unit's residential school (either at a previous residential school or as an internal student), then the relevant School, may exempt you.
    • If you have a disability you may be considered for exemption where it is apparent that your disability is such that you cannot meet residential requirements. You must write to the Student Centre (providing appropriate medical evidence) before seeking enrolment in the unit so that you situation may be considered by the relevant School.
    • If you have personal or religious beliefs that prevent you from attending part of a compulsory residential school, and you have informed the Student Centre of these before seeking enrolment in the relevant unit, you may be considered for a partial exemption.
  • If you are inmate of a prison or are detained on remand you may apply for exemption. You must write to Student Centre (providing appropriate evidence) before seeking enrolment in the unit so that your situation may be considered by the relevant School.
