14-1999

An issue treating particularly of the New Storytelling, of Heritage Matters and of distinctive Varieties of (Australian) English

This annual volume, from the Australian Folklore Association- one of more than 300 pages - is a sequel both to that body's earlier publications and to the Proceedings of the earlier Conferences (issued under various auspices). Its style and contents have, alike, been shaped in response to the various developing strands observable in folkloristics both in Australia and overseas.

We are delighted that our dialogue with important overseas journals has continued, as has the number of contributions submitted from other countries.both in Australia and overseas. Similarly we have been able to re-direct articles to such journals as the more appropriate places for them to appear.

Another feature - consonant with Australian folklore's growth - is the increase in the more numerous papers offered in the region of material culture and folklife, several of which are included in this present issue.

This issue contains:

  • Story, Narrative, and Song - some 10 pieces from various countries
  • (Folk) Heritage and Globalisation - 3 articles of considerable perspective
  • Varieties of (Australian) English -  4 articles
  • A Cluster entitled 'A Distant Drum', and containing material from Mid -  Victorian England, and the thought of the late Raymond Professor Raymond Williams (U.K.)  on yesterday's Britain , as well as more recent material on Culture and Politics in Britain; and
  • a pair of articles on Disaster and Millennarism from various (disciplinary) perspectives.
  • Another cluster is concerned with more domestic Australian materials  and perspectives.

There are also various reports ; accounts of recent teaching of Folklore in Australia; 6 lengthy book reviews; 13 shorter ones, and numerous notes and comments. The usual Notes, Notices and Comments appear throughout as well as various illustrautions, sketches and diagrams, and the advance notices of the major Folk Narrative Conference to be held in Melbourne.
