Facilities Management Geographic Information System

GIS Layers

In 2006 FMS commenced the implementation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) for the University campus. The purpose of the GIS is to provide up-to-date detailed electronic maps that show the above and below ground services and buildings at UNE. These maps, which will include asset information, will be used in areas such as infrastructure maintenance, construction projects, disaster planning, infrastructure planning and property title management.

In 2006 an aerial survey company was commissioned to produce a high resolution orthophotomap of the campus. The orthophotomap, with a positional accuracy in the order of 15 cm, is now being overlayed with information on the location and attributes of each service e.g. data communication lines, sewer, electricity, water, roads, buildings. These data are being collated from a variety of sources including paper plans, CAD drawings, surveyors’ surveys and local knowledge. Field survey work is to be undertaken to refine these data and confirm its accuracy and completeness.

The orthophotomap is also being used for teaching and research at UNE and is available for use by members of the University community. A section of the orthophotomap is reproduced below.
