Waterless Urinals

The University campus has approx. 210 urinals across all buildings. Whilst almost all of these have been converted from “fill and flush” cisterns to user operated flushing, it is estimated that approx 4000 litres of water per day is still being flushed down our urinals. In a year of University operation (allowing for weekends and term breaks) this equates to approx. 1,000,000 litres of water.

 Surprisingly, urine itself is not the main source of the odour problem in urinals. Urine is 98% water and is usually sterile. The problem begins when bacteria bind with the solids found in urine, and give off toxic ammonia based gases. Conventional flushing is needed only to get rid of the urine before the odour forming process can take place. Desert Waterless Urinal Cubes contain naturally occurring microbes that inhibit this binding process. Correct cleaning techniques ensure the health of the urinal environment and flushing is no longer required.
