Paper Use at UNE

Did you know that UNE used a total of 84,480 reams of printing paper between Sept 02 and Sept 03?This is equivalent to 225,280 kg of paper or 2,925 trees! In fact, if you stacked up all reams, one on top of the other, it would produce a pile of paper 4.6 km high!

This amount of paper is equivalent to 563 barrels of oil, 900m3 of landfill space, 9 million KWh of electricity and 7.2 million litres of water.

How can we reduce our paper use?

Reduce the amount of paper you use in your office

  • Don’t print out your e-mails!
  • Send documents by email rather than hard copies!
  • Try and avoid printing draft copies of your documents!

Reuse the paper in your office

  • Always print double sided!
  • Tip: Set the default on your office printer to print double sided!

Recycle your paper

  • Put paper (only printed double sided) in the paper recycling bin in your office!
  • Even old telephone directories and newspapers can be put in your office paper recycle bin!

Waste Management

Recycling is beneficial to the environment in several ways:

  • Recycling reduces the amount of resources consumed and thus reduces the environmental impacts from resource production for example mining, oil consumption and loss of forests;
  • Most recycled materials require less energy to produce than the original material, thus helping to reduce energy consumption;
  • Waste materials can create environmental problems when they are disposed of, such as water pollution from landfills and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling reduces the amount of waste going to landfill, thus minimizing these environmental impacts.

Current recycling and waste management services at UNE include:

  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Toner cartridges and photocopier bottles
  • Co-mingled glass bottles, plastic bottles and cans
