Energy

Australians are recognised as being one of the most intensive users of energy across throughout the world. Per capita Australians use four times more than the world average. Energy management at UNE aims to improve energy use efficiency by addressing the specific operational and environmental challenges that are encountered on campus. To achieve this UNE has adopted a comprehensive Energy Management Policy [.pdf 17kb] which provides an effective framework for improving energy use efficiency.

Building Management System

The University has developed a comprehensive Building Management System (BMS) that is across the campus. This system consists of meters that monitor energy usage throughout the campus and provides the ability for automation of key services such as: heating, ventilation and air-conditioning. These services can be adjusted to meet the ambient climatic conditions and building use requirements.

The metering system provides detailed data for level by level energy use of each individual building. This system allows for identification of areas of high energy use and the development of targeted strategies to mitigate energy use. These strategies could vary from informing key stakeholders to installing smart energy saving devices.

Computer Power Settings

Using a desktop computer for around eight hours a day over the working year can generate over 600 kilograms of greenhouse gases. Screen savers waste energy and can use twice the energy to light up the screen as they use for processing. Below are simple instructions to reduce energy usage:

PC

To choose a power scheme;

  1. Open Power Options in Control Panel (To open, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options).
  2. Under Power Schemes, select the power scheme you want. The power settings you see will change depending on the power scheme you choose.
