Car Park Upgrades

Money collected from the sale of Permits & Coupons as well as income generated through Parking Fines is directed back into the upkeep of the University’s parking infrastructure. Since the introduction of pay for parking several major projects have been undertaken by Facilities Management Services with revenue generated from Parking. These projects have been:

Southern Car Park Upgrade - 2003/04

This involved the resurfacing of the entire car park, line marking, the installation of car park lighting, installation of a help phone as well as the creation of a separate section of the car park for use by residence of Mary White College. This involved the installation of an access controlled boom gate as well as perimeter chain fencing. All in all the cost of this work was in excess of $185, 000

Drummond Smith Car Park Upgrade - 2004/05

This project cost in excess of $1,000,000.

Rural Futures Car Park Upgrade - 2007/08

As part of the old Geology Building Refurbishment recently completed at UNE a decision was made to include in that contract, an upgrade to the old gravel car park between the Rural Futures & Geology Buildings. This car park was deteriorating and was becoming an OH&S risk. Also storm water run off was causing damage to the Rural Futures Building below it.

The upgrade took place between December 2007 and March 2008. The project involved a full Australian Standard compliant design carried out by engineering firm Local Government Services Pty Ltd. Work included the removal of the old pavement to a depth of 450mm, re-shaping and reconstruction of new base and sub-base pavements. Line marking was also carried out after a fully marked two coat bitumen seal had been laid with new Kerb and Guttering also added. The scope of works also included new storm water drainage, upgrades to existing water and electrical services that run under the car park, new lighting, landscaping and signage. The total cost of this project was in excess of $250,000.00

Education Car Park Upgrade - 2007/08

Work on the upgrade began in January 2008 due to a number of OH&S issues and a number of accidents occurring over the previous years. Local Government Engineering Pty Ltd was engaged to document the plans for the new upgrade, these documents were completed in August 2007 and prepared for tender. Bricon Pty Ltd. was successful and commenced site establishment in November 2007. The project spanned 3 months with the completion on the 19th March 2008 after many delays due to wet weather.

The works involved the complete removal of the existing surface of the car park to a depth of 450mm and replaced with new sub-base and bitumen to new levels. Also included was the installation of Kurb and guttering as well as line marking plus new lighting and help phones to Australian Standards. The total cost of the works, funded by the University of New England Traffic & Parking Policy exceeded $365,000.00
