University of New England Insurance Programs

Insurance Information

The University maintains various policies of insurance to meet its legal obligations, and to provide funds for the repair or replacement of assets damaged or destroyed. The University's insurance policies are renewed each year on 31 October & 31 December. This information is intended asa guide only. Please contact the Insurance Office in Financial Services if further information is required.

Excesses

Policy excess may apply to claims under a particular policy for two reasons:

The amount of the excess varies for different policies. Please refer to the insurance office for further details.

The Insurance Office maintains records and submits regular returns to insurers as required by the policy. If there are any significant changes in the activities of the University/Cost Centre, that may affect insurance coverage, these should be discussed immediately wit the Insurance Office.

Notification of Incidents(injury/illness) other than Staff

Early notification by an authorised person is essential where incidents occur that may have insurance implications. In the case of serious injury, notification should be made immediately. Other occurrences should be reported in writing to the Insurance Office, within 5 working days. An incident report must be completed and returned to the Safety and Security Office.

Loss or damage of assets

Notification should be made to the Insurance Office, Safety and Security and Facilities Management(building damage) as soon as the damage/loss is discovered. Damaged equipment and supplies must not be destroyed or disposed of without the approval of the Insurance Office. In the case of items, recorded on the University's asset register, an asset disposal authority must be completed and signed by an authorised signatory and forwarded to the Assets Officer( Financial Services) before the items can be disposed of.

  1. For the loss or damage of University property:
    • The Insurance Office will handle the claim
    • Where a claim is doubtful, the Insurance Office
      may advise you to delay repair or replacement,
      pending the decision of the Insurer
  2. For injury to a third party, or loss or damage to the
    of a third party:
    • The claim will be processed by the Insurance
      Office and submitted to the Insurer. The Insurer
      will normally make settlement direct with the third
      party. Any correspondence received should be
      forwarded directly to the Insurance Office.

Notification of Incident to the Police

The Faculty, School, Directorate or Department must notify the Safety and Security Office in the event of the following:

Safety and Security will advise if the incident needs to be reported to the police.

Admission of Liability

As a general principal, a person must not make any admission of liability with third parties.

Investigation

As a consequence of an incident and its subsequent notification to the insurer by the University, an investigation may be undertaken. Such an investigation may be on behalf of the University's Insurer or on behalf of a third party. A solicitor, a loss adjuster or any other person undertaking an investigation must be directed to the Insurance Office in the first instance.

Accepted convention, when a claim is made under any policy, is that the insurer will appoint a loss assessor or solicitor to act on behalf of the University. The Insurance Office will assist staff members in providing any information required. Any legal correspondence i.e. letters from solicitors or court documents which have insurance implications should be sent to the Legal Office and a copy sent to the Insurance Office.

University of New England Insurance Programs

Industrial Special Risks (ISR)

This policy covers all real and tangible property of every kind and description, including business interruption for physical loss, destruction or damage, subject to the policy conditions and exclusions.

An excess of $12,000 each and every claim applies.

Public and Products Liability

This policy covers the University's legal liability to pay compensation for personal injury (non-staff) and damage to third party's property, subject to the policy conditions and exclusions.

An excess of $5,000 applies in respect of any one occurrence.

Professional Indemnity (Replaces Errors and Omissions)

This policy covers the University, it's staff and students for legal liability arising out of a breach of professional duty by reason of any negligent act, error or omission committed or alleged to have been committed by the insured parties whilst engaged in University sanctioned teaching, research, associated consulting work and research & development activities, subject to the policy conditions & exclusions.

An excess of $1,000 applies any one act.

Corporate Travel

This policy covers staff and students engaged in a journey within Australia or overseas on approved University Business. Cover in excess of 6 months attracts an additional premium payable by the traveller.

Additional coverage can be arranged for accompanying partners and children upon payment of a premium. A Travel Application form must be completed and can be downloaded from the frequently requested information section above. Payment is to be made to the University, via the Insurance Office, prior to commencement of the travel. This policy is subject to strict conditions and exclusions.

An excess of $100 each and every claim applies.

Medical Malpractice

This policy provides cover for the University, its staff and students for liability as a result of damages or injury arising from malpractice associated with the following activities:

An excess of $100,000 each and every claim applies.

Comprehensive Motor Vehicle

This policy provides cover for all vehicles registered in the name of the University for loss, damage or liability arising form the lawful use of the vehicle.

Various excesses apply based on age and experience, refer motor vehicle guidelines.

Student Personal Accident

This policy provides cover for students engaged in course related activities for accidental injury subject to strict policy conditions and exclusions.

Various excesses apply.

Marine Hull

This policy provides cover for the University for loss or damage to all marine vessels and legal liability arising out of the use of such vessels.

An excess of $500 each claim applies.

Marine Transit

This policy provides coverage for household goods and personal effects of new staff appointees to the value of $80,000. Additional coverage can be arranged where full declared values exceed $80,000, subject to payment by the staff member.

An excess of $500 applies.
