Current Research
Project 1. Rijckloff van Goens (1619-82): His Life and World. A book-length biography of Van Goens who rose from humble origins to the highest office in the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and who, at different times, fulfilled the functions of diplomat, admiral, field commander, governor, magistrate, director of trade, and finally, that of Governor-General of the Indies. In addition to tracing his eventful life, this biography will address such issues as the dynamics of 17th Century European expansion in Asia, the changing pattern of Asian trade, and Dutch trade policy in general. (This is a long-term project. However, three Chapters in this biography have already been published, or are about to be published, as journal articles).
Project 2. Anthony van Diemen (1593-1645): Patron of Discovery and Exploration. A monograph about Van Diemen, emphasizing his role as organizer of geographical discovery and exploration. As I envisage it now, this monograph will consist of two parts, each of about 8,000-10,000 words in length. The first part will take the form of a biographical essay that tells the remarkable story of Van Diemen's rise from relative obscurity in the Netherlands to his accession, in 1636, the Governor-Generalship of the Indies. The second part will focus on Van Diemen's period as GG, the years from 1636 until his death in 1645. It will deal in the main with the five voyages of discovery that Van Diemen conceived and organized, namely, the three voyages in search of the Great South Land (Pool, 1636; Tasman, 1642-43, and Tasman, 1644), and the two voyages in search of the Gold- and Silver Islands that were believed to be situated in the North Pacific, somewhere to the east of Japan.
Project 3. A Clash of Cultures: Jeremias van Vliet and the 1636 Incident at Ayutthaya, Siam. A monograph about an incident at Ayutthaya, the capital of Siam, in which 12 members of the Dutch trading post there, after offending against the customs of Siam, were sentenced to be trampled to death by elephants. Although Van Vliet, the Director of the trading post, after many bribes and public humiliation before the King, managed to have the sentences commuted, the incident led to a clash between Van Diemen, the Governor-General at Batavia, and Prasat Thong, the King of Siam, a clash which revealed a vast chasm between Western and Eastern conceptions of justice and due process. Prospective publisher: The Siam Society, Bangkok, 2000 or 2001.
