Master of Business Administration Program
Overview
The MBA enables students to develop a broad range of management skills. While the award enables the development of general management knowledge, it also provides an opportunity for students to specialise by selecting one of six majors including business law, marketing, human resource management, international business, IT management and public sector management. It is not necessary, however, to complete a major. Students complete 12 units from approximately 60 units.
The program comprises 3 awards that allow different entry and exit points for students:
- Master of Business Administration (12 units)
- Graduate Diploma in Management (8 units)
- Graduate Certificate in Management (4 units)
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have completed a three year degree or;
(a) have completed the Graduate Certificate in Management or another Graduate Certificate approved by the Program Director with at least
a credit average grade or;
(b) have completed the Graduate Diploma in Management.
They must also have three years’ relevant workexperience in a field of employment approved by the Program Director of the GSB.
Course Structure
To qualify for the degree candidates must complete 12 units to the value of 72 credit points. Between 6
and 9 foundation units must be completed from the list below:

Business Law major
The Business Law major develops a range of conceptual and analytical skills in aspects of law relevant to managers. It focuses particularly on commercial law applied both domestically and internationally, including laws related to taxation (particularly income tax). To major in Business Law, students must successfully complete:

Human Resource Management major
Human Resource Management is concerned with the enhancement of employee effectiveness and satisfaction through skill motivation, leadership, communication, and personal and professional skill development. The demand is growing for people trained in this fundamental area of management and the MBA program recognises this need. To major in Human Resource Management, students must successfully complete:

Information Technology Management major
The Information Technology Management major is designed to impart the knowledge to create and use information technology for management purposes.
The course has been specifically designed to meet the needs of managers from non-technical backgrounds who are seeking to develop skills in information technology. To major in Information Technology Management, students must successfully complete:

International Business major
This major provides a range of conceptual and practical skills enabling students to identify and seize opportunities provided by the international economy. The units in this major are designed to assist managers to identify, analyse and solve business problems with an international dimension and adapt to the changing world order. Emphasis is placed on the cultural and social attributes of Australia’s major trading partners in addition to economic, political, legal, financial and other institutional parameters. Marketing major
The Marketing major is designed to provide a balanced combination of theoretical depth and practical management skills in marketing. Broad coverage of marketing management is extended by additional attention to buyer behaviour, market research, international marketing and marketing strategy. The persistent emphasis is on commercial organisations. Attention is paid, however, to marketing as it applies to the variety of organisations in the non-commercial sector, including the public sector and not-for-profits. Public Sector Management major
The Public Sector Management major provides the skills, knowledge and perspectives required by candidates seeking to further their careers in government or semi-government agencies at the Federal, State and local level. This major is particularly relevant to those whose interest is principally in Australian public sector management or in business organisations having extensive dealings with government. The major is designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics and special features of management in public sector institutions, including statutory bodies and government commercial operations. Particular attention is given to the interface of public sector institutions with business and industry.

Research
GSB 791/2/3 Research Topics. A research project worth up to three units may also be undertaken as part of your MBA. This will require the completion of GSB 656 Methods in Organisational Research and the permission of the Director. Research topics should be done late in your studies.
