DEHub: Innovation in Distance Education
A key aspect of the Rural Resurgence Initiative is the use of advanced technologies to deliver knowledge and to allow interaction across distance.
The University of New England is leading a $3.5 million project that will engage the Australian tertiary education sector in discussion and collaborative research on the practice of distance education.
The Distance Education Hub (DEHub) was established in 2009 as a research consortium between the University of New England (UNE), Charles Sturt University (CSU), Central Queensland University (CQUniversity), and the University of Southern Queensland (USQ).
The DEHub website serves as a central hub to facilitate and support the research and dissemination of best practices in distance education in the Australian higher education sector. DEHub primarily supports research around three key themes:
- Distance Education Teaching and Learning
- Distance Education Research and Development
- Distance Education Community and Open Learning
The site was also designed along the DEHub project’s operational priorities (ease-of-access, ease-of-understanding, and ease-of-implementation) to present a clear and fresh portal to best aid the different learning styles and priorities of visitors within the one environment.
DEHub will use advanced technologies to deliver knowledge and to allow interaction across distance. The project will:
- Develop more efficient ways of transmitting traditional educational products.
- Reduce knowledge disadvantage for rural people by generating innovations in the use of advanced technologies.
- Provide a clearing-house of expertise in 3 distance education program areas; DE Learning, DE Community and DE Research and Evaluation.
A major international conference in Australia will be held to draw together experts in the field to deliver papers to guide the use of distance technology education.
DEHub is financed through a Diversity and Structural Adjustment Fund provided by the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Employment, and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
