E-learning in pre-service teacher education: creating spaces for critically engaging with the theory/practice relationship in infant and toddler care

When: 11.00 - 12.00 Thursday 19 February

Professor Geoff Crisp at UNE (Oct 2008) speaking about "Interactive e-Assessment: more than just multiple-choice"

geoff crisp

This presentation will examine how contemporary perspectives on e-learning can be used to create critically engaging learning experiences for pre-service teachers. Creating opportunities for pre-service educators to critically engage with contemporary perspectives in early childhood is likely to relate to their later capacity to provide quality early learning experiences for young children. Conducted within a unit of study associated with infant and toddler care, these experiences suggest potential for supporting pre-service teachers to articulate a strongly grounded perspective on the relationship between theory and practice when working with very young children. Dr Susan Edwards, of Monash University, is an expert in e-learning, particularly in Early Childhood Education (ECE). She has many outstanding and innovative examples of her practices and development of on-line units in ECE that she is willing to share with us. Dr Edwards has won numerous awards for her innovative approach to e-learning in higher education, including the 2004 Monash University Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Online Learning, a 2006 citation from the Australian Teaching and Learning Council and the 2007 Monash University Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr Edwards has also published in the area of e-learning and teaching education, including in A* and A journals, such as Teaching and Teacher Education and Technology, Pedagogy and Education.
