Enhancing ecosystem function
Ecosystem services: The nature and value of ecosystem services receive considerable attention from a number of Sustainable Farming researchers.
Issues such as the importance of biodiversity in production landscapes, tree/grass interactions, the importance of refugia for beneficial insects, the ecology and management of grassy ecosystems, fire management for nature conservation in wilderness areas and assessments of remnant vegetation on cotton farms are some of those which have been investigated.
Members of our Sustainable Farming group have experience in developing participative experiences with landholders, in monitoring land condition at the farm scale and also in environmental dispute resolution.
Capturing carbon: The energy efficiency of our natural and agricultural ecosystems is an important focus for some of our members. The issue of carbon sequestration and climate change has been investigated through international collaborative research on land-use change and forestry for carbon sequestration and poverty reduction.
