The School of Environmental and Rural Science (ERS) at UNE is renowned for its research intensity involving more than 100 Doctoral and Masters students, who are strongly supported by industry and the University. Research post-graduate students are active in all disciplinary areas of the School which include Agronomy and Soil Science, Animal Science, Botany, Ecosystem Management, Environmental Engineering, Geoscience, and Zoology. Our postgraduate research students work with recognized experts, while building networks with their mentors and peers that will stay with them for life.
We recognise the significant contribution that Higher Degree Research students and their supervisors make in ensuring and maintaining a vibrant academic, research-led community, and we aim to achieve a high standard of excellence in learning, research and supervision. The highly diverse agricultural and environmental systems in the New England region provide a unique research environment for many of our students.
Support
All research students are strongly supported with a team of supervisors lead by a principal supervisor, and are resourced by internal research grants of up to $5000 per year, conference travel up to $1000, and a new computer on commencement. We also provide the resources needed for students for technical support, OHS training including first aid, and motor vehicle use through student induction. In addition, workshops in statistics and post-graduate conferences can be internally arranged by students.
Finding a Research Project and Supervisor
We encourage prospective postgraduate research students to explore our subject area pages to learn more about our areas of interest, and to contact an academic staff member directly to explore opportunities for study in a particular area. Many staff can offer targeted research scholarships, usually related to specific research grants, and staff can often work with prospective students to create projects targeted to their specific needs. UNE Research Scholarships are also available through a competitive application process.
You are encouraged to contact our academic staff directly and discuss your research interests with them. By providing them with a full CV and details of your academic record, together you can find topics and degrees that best suit your needs. Contact the School’s postgraduate co-ordinator A/Prof. Peter Clarke (ershdr@une.edu.au) if you have any problems with finding someone suitable, or if you have problems with administration contact Shirley Fraser (ershdr@une.edu.au).
