Discipline of Animal Science
Set in the glorious New England tablelands and surrounded by some of the most productive sheep and cattle grazing enterprises in Australia, it is not surprising that there is major expertise in Animal Science at UNE. There is a focus on grazing enterprises, and this is reflected in our role as a core party, in both the Cattle and Beef Industry and in the Australian Sheep Industry CRCs. Although historically our main research strengths have been for ruminant species, research in the intensive animal industries has grown dramatically (e.g. Australian Poultry CRC). Research on companion animals such as horses and dogs are on a smaller scale and are mostly focused on specific aspects of nutrition and genetics.
A broad range of expertise among the academic staff ensures innovative research programmes in all relevant areas of livestock production. These include: genetics, nutrition, animal behaviour, meat and wool science, parasitology and animal health. The Animal Science group of the School has a large and very active postgraduate group with students working towards Masters Degrees and PhDs. There is a good mix of international and Australian students in a 1:2 ratio.
Animal Science is fortunate to have purpose-built facilities. The concept of a Homestead surrounded by a Woolshed and various farm buildings provides an ideal environment for the study of Animal Science. The complex incorporates state of the art lecture theatres, seminar rooms, laboratories and offices, and is adjacent to the animal house complex and adjoins one of the University farms. The research feedlot on 'Tullimba' 40km from Armidale, is another purpose-built facility for rersearch activities.
