FNDN 101: Foundation Skills for University Learning 1

Foundation 101 is offered as part of the UNE Pathways Enabling Course. It covers aspects of academic literacy and the requirements of successful university study; basic information literacy related to finding, selecting and using information; essential computer & internet skills to facilitate effective learning; and the basic numeracy & statistical skills required in first year units of study .

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the early requirements of university study and how to be an independent learner; understand the basics of academic writing and the steps in the writing process; understand how to reference correctly and avoid plagiarism; apply effective study strategies (time management, effective reading and exam preparation).
  2. Find information; select and sort information; synthesise information; keep track of information.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in National Education Numeracy benchmark content areas; apply skills agreed by UNE faculties as essential within their particular disciplines.
  4. Use essential programs for study; operate and maintain computer and peripherals; understand ethical issues associated with computer and internet use.

FNDN 102: Foundation Skills for University Learning 2

Foundation 102 is offered as part of the UNE Pathways Enabling Course. It builds on the literacies covered in FNDN 101: Academic Literacy ; Information Literacy; Numeracy & Statistical Literacy ; and Computer & Internet Literacy.

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Be independent learners; reflect upon and build on their experience (in Semester 1 and concurrent); write essays and other assessment tasks; master advanced referencing; and think critically.
  2. Carry out refined information literacy functions.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in basic algebra; understand most commonly encountered mathematical terminology; draw inferences from data.
  4. Manage and protect files; understand HTML protocols; and be an effective user of technology to facilitate lifelong learning.
