Visa Conditions
International students in Australia are required to observe certain visa conditions. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) website provides information on the conditions of student visas, as well as forms and other information. Some of the main points students need to be aware of are summarised below:
Students must:
- notify the University of their current Australian address within seven days of their arrival
- remain enrolled in a full-time programme (normally four units per semester) and attend classes in accordance with University policy
- not work in Australia more than 20 hours a week when their course is in session
- achieve satisfactory results
- notify DIAC of any changes to their choice of course immediately
- not change education providers in the first 6 months, except in some exceptional circumstances
- maintain overseas health cover throughout the term of their student visa
- satisfy the requirements of the visa they were granted, including sufficient financial capacity to support themselves and any dependents during their study
- send all school-age children to school and all relevant school fees must be paid in full. Any student dependents must not leave Australia after the student.
For more information about visa conditions, consult the DIAC website or visit UNE International for advice.
Visa Extensions
Students may need to extend their student visa if it expires before their course ends. To extend a student visa:
- Please visit UNE International in order to request a new Confirmation of Enrolment. Students will need evidence of their need for an extension. Research Students require a letter from Research Services indicating extension of their candidature
- Applications for visa extension can be made online at the DIAC website and cost $550 (payable by credit card or BPay)
- Postgraduate and Research students should note that they may be required to undergo health checks
- Students may be required to provide evidence of their capacity to support themselves financially for the remainder of their stay in Australia.
More information about visa extensions is available at the DIAC website.
Work Visas
International students who have a current student visa granted on or after 26 April 2008 cannot work more than 20 hours per week when their course is in session. They may work unlimited hours during vacation time.
Students should note that although they are permitted to work for 20 hours during semester, it is not recommended as it may have a negative effect on the student's ability to study and keep up with their course work. Students should discuss the ramifications of working with the International Services staff.
For more information about work visas go to the DIAC website.
