Visa Conditions
International students in Australia are required to observe certain visa conditions. The DIAC website provides information on the conditions of student visas, as well as forms and other information. Some of the main points students need to be aware of are summarised below:
- Students must notify the University of their current Australian address within seven days of their arrival
- Students must remain enrolled in a full-time programme (normally four units per semester) and attend classes in accordance with University policy
- Students cannot work in Australia unless they apply for a new student visa with permission to work once they have arrived in Australia
- Students must achieve satisfactory results
- Students must notify DIAC of any changes to their choice of course immediately
- Students may not change education providers in the first year, except in some exceptional circumstances
- Students must maintain overseas health cover troughout the term of their student visa
- Students must satisfy the requirements of the visa they were granted, including sufficient financial capacity to support themselves and any dependents during their study
- School age children of students must attend school and all relevant school fees must be paid in full. Any student dependents must not leave Australia after the student.
Visa Extensions
Students may need to extend their student visa if it expires before their course ends. To extend a student visa:
- Complete a student enquiry form or visit the International Precinct in order to request a new Confirmation of Enrolment. Students will need evidence of their need for an extension - Research Students require a letter from Research Services indicating extension of their candidature
- Applications for visa extension can be made online at the DIAC website and cost $430 (payable by credit card)
- Postgraduate and Research students should note that they may be required to undergo health checks
- Students will be required to provide evidence of their capacity to support themselves financially for the remainder of their stay in Australia.
More information about visa extensions is available at the DIAC website.
Work Visas
International students who have a current student visa are entitled to apply for a work visa while they are in Australia. Students on a work visa are entitled to work up to 20 hours per week during semester, and unlimited hours during vacation time.
Students should note that although they are permitted to work for 20 hours during semester, it is not recommended as it may have a negative effect on the student's ability to study and keep up with their course work. Students should discuss the ramifications of working with the International Services staff.
For more information about work visas go to the DIAC website.
