acknowledge
indicate that a piece of information comes from another text
active
the form of the verb used when the person or thing doing the action is the subject of the verb (opp. passive)
adjective
a word which modifies a noun, but which is not itself a noun
adverb
a word which modifies a verb, an adjective, another adverb or a whole sentence
associated adjective
the adjective form of a noun, verb or adverb
bibliographic information
details related to the texts used in creating a piece of writing
block quotation
a quotation which, typically because of its length, is expressed as an indented paragraph
clause
a unit of sentence structure which contains a verb, and usually also a subject
condense
express an idea in fewer words
context
the text that occurs before and after a piece of text
contradictory
expressing the opposite idea to something else
direct quotation
a piece of text copied verbatim into another text, and enclosed by inverted commas (cf. indirect quotation)
excerpt
a short piece taken from a text
illustrative example
an example designed to show how a word or phrase is used
indirect quotation
a piece of text incorporated into another text through a paraphrase, and not indicated by any punctuation marks (cf. direct quotation)
integrate
bring together and blend several things into one
in-text referencing
a convention for acknowledging the source of a piece of information
parenthesis
a punctuation mark used to insert information into a text
passive
the form of the verb used when the person or thing undergoing the action is the subject of the verb (opp. active)
reference list
the list of sources used in creating a piece of writing
summarise
to express an idea in terms of the main points only
synonym
a word which has the same meaning as another word
synthesise
to express something new by combining information from different sources
