English for Academic Purposes

The EAP course is for students who wish to develop English language proficiency and study skills for tertiary study in Australia. This course also offers direct entry into The University of New England for students who meet the academic requirements, in addition to achieving pass or greater results in the EAP or achieving an appropriate IELTS score for their field of study. English for Academic purposes can also be undertaken by students who wish to improve their English language skills to an advanced level, but do not necessarily wish to undertake further study.

Students must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Completion of secondary school
  • Have completed some English studies at secondary school
  • Be at least university entrance age (17 years)

Students with low English proficiency levels may be required to undertake preliminary study in General English for up to 20 weeks prior to entering EAP. EAP consists of two 10 week courses. Classes operate for 25 hours each week, from 9:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday.

The English for Academic Purposes course aims to:

  1. Develop skills and strategies in
    1. Speaking and understanding English in academic contexts
    2. Speaking and understanding English in informal social/community contexts
    3. Reading English
      1. For academic purposes
      2. For general communication purposes
    4. Writing English
      1. For academic purposes
      2. For more general communication purposes
    5. Using study resources
      1. Library research skills
      2. Introductory computing skills for study purposes
  2. Extend learners' awareness of cross-cultural differences and of how to use language appropriately to negotiate these differences
  3. Develop strategies appropriate for independent learning in an Australian university

Upon completion of the EAP course, if students do not meet the direct entry criteria for UNE, they have the option of sitting for the next IELTS test conducted at the centre.

Students also receive a Progress Report and a Certificate of Completion.
