General English (GE)

The General English course comprises four 10 week modules, though students can undertake between 5 and 40 weeks of the course, depending on their current English abilities and desired outcomes. The GE course also provides entry into English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course for students who do not initially meet the EAP criteria.
Any non-English background speaking students are eligible for entry into this course, though basic communication skills in English would be an advantage.
Levels of Study:

Each level includes 210 hours of ESL (English as a Second Language) classes and 40 hours of self-access time in a multi-media lab, totalling 250 hours. Another 10 weeks can be taken by students at the completion of the four levels as extra tuition, if they wish to take the IELTS test. Before beginning the General English program, the English language skills of students are assessed. This determines the level at which students will commence their program of English language tuition.
The General English course aims to:
- Develop skills and strategies in
- speaking and understanding English in informal social and community contexts.
- reading English for leisure purposes and for transactional purposes.
- writing English for social purposes and for transactional purposes
- Develop pronunciation, grammar and fluency skills using contemporary Australian teaching methods.
- Extend learners' awareness of cross-cultural differences and of how to use language appropriately to negotiate these differences.
- Develop skills for independent learning outside the classroom.
Students receive a Progress Report during the course and a Certificate of Completion upon finishing the course successfully.

The EAP course is for students who wish to develop English language proficiency and study skills for tertiary study in Australia. This course also offers direct entry into The University of New England for students who meet the academic requirements, in addition to achieving pass or greater results in the EAP or achieving an appropriate IELTS score for their field of study. English for Academic purposes can also be undertaken by students who wish to improve their English language skills to an advanced level, but do not necessarily wish to undertake further study.
Students must meet the following entry requirements:
- Completion of secondary school
- Have completed some English studies at secondary school
- Be at least university entrance age (17 years)
Students with low English proficiency levels may be required to undertake preliminary study in General English for up to 20 weeks prior to entering EAP. EAP consists of two 10 week courses. Classes operate for 25 hours each week, from 9:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday.
The English for Academic Purposes course aims to:
- Develop skills and strategies in
- Speaking and understanding English in academic contexts
- Speaking and understanding English in informal social/community contexts
- Reading English
- For academic purposes
- For general communication purposes
- Writing English
- For academic purposes
- For more general communication purposes
- Using study resources
- Library research skills
- Introductory computing skills for study purposes
- Extend learners' awareness of cross-cultural differences and of how to use language appropriately to negotiate these differences
- Develop strategies appropriate for independent learning in an Australian university
Upon completion of the EAP course, if students do not meet the direct entry criteria for UNE, they have the option of sitting for the next IELTS test conducted at the centre.
Students also receive a Progress Report and a Certificate of Completion.

Introductory Academic Program (IAP)

The Introductory Academic Program (IAP) is designed for students who are intending to study in an Australian university for the first time, or for students who wish to update their study skills and English language skills prior to commencing undergraduate or postgraduate study. The IAP course is also ideal for students who meet university entry requirements or who have accepted a place at university in Australia, and require study assistance to meet their academic goals.
The IAP course is conducted over (5) weeks and aims to develop skills and strategies in:
- Academic reading and writing skills
- Academic presentation and participation skills
- Library and research skills
- Basic computer skills for study purposes
- Orientation to Australian University teaching and learning practices
Additional units are available in note-taking skills and Australian culture and society. On-going assessment is carried out during the course, with final assessments carried out at the end of the course. Students receive a Certificate of Completion.
