Mission
The Faculty of Education, Health and Professional Studies, within the context of the UNE Vision Statement, is committed to being a national and international leader in education, professional and health studies, with a continuing commitment to serve regional Australia. This will be achieved through flexible open learning, professional life-long education, and a balanced approach to research, teaching, scholarship, community and professional service in its major areas.Guiding Values
The Faculty of Education, Health and Professional Studies endorses the values identified in the UNE Strategic Plan 2003 - 2005. The Faculty particularly values:

Major Goals
The Faculty of Education, Health and Professional Studies, in accordance with the UNE Strategic Plan 2003 - 2005, seeks to achieve the following major goals.
- Development of a learning and working environment that promotes the highest level and quality of achievement in research, teaching/learning and professional service.
- Advancement of knowledge and scholarship in the professional areas within the Faculty.
- Achievement and advancement of appropriate benchmarks in the Faculty's professional areas.
- Maximisation of flexible delivery of programs to support effective learning by different client groups in different geographical locations.
- Development of a culture in a learning organisation that promotes the continuing professional development of staff in association with their associated wider communities.
- Determination of the most effective ways in which to serve regional Australia through the cognate areas in the Faculty to enhance their cultural, professional, educational, health and social lives.
- Increased efficiency in the delivery of higher education programs through a more effective administrative organisation and a diversified resource base.
- Development and enhancement of research, teaching/learning and professional service in areas of strategic priority.
- Development and enhancement of a culture of scholarship.
- Development and enhancement of entrepreneurial activities and programs.
- Development of a staff profile to maximise scholarly leadership and innovative thinking.
- Adequate infrastructure to support maximal development in research, teaching/learning, consultancy and professional service.

- Development of cooperation and interaction with other Faculties in the University to encourage more rounded concepts of knowledge and scholarship and to help maximise the creation of effective learning opportunities.
- Promote critical debate on social and community issues.
- Effective implementation of University Budgetary Principles across all Faculty activities.
- Development and fostering of international teaching, research and consultancy.
Objectives
Research
The Faculty endorses the values, goals and objectives expressed in the UNE Strategic Plan 2003 - 2005 with regard to research and the commitment to standards of excellence in research activity and research training that maintain professional ethical standards of the highest order. Consequently, the Faculty will:
- encourage and support creative and innovative scholarly inquiry;
- provide a supportive research environment;
- enhance research competency through the provision of high quality research training, mentoring novice researchers and appropriate research leadership;
- increase research productivity across the Faculty;
- engage in priority setting in research;
- develop strategic areas in research within the faculty;
- increase its overall performance in research from competitive grants schemes;
- develop adequate infrastructure support for research;
- develop effective research management policies;
- publicise research activities and achievements with relevant professions, employers and industries; and
- disseminate the results of research through appropriate means internally and externally;
- enhance the quality of postgraduate research and training across the professional areas of the Faculty.
Teaching and Learning
The Faculty endorses the goals and objectives expressed in the UNE Strategic Plan 2003 - 2005. To advance teaching and learning, the Faculty will achieve the following objectives:
- maintain and further develop a supportive, socially just and stimulating learning and teaching environment;
- promote excellence in all teaching with both undergraduate and postgraduate students using flexible forms of delivery;
- develop and implement high quality, principled courses and units based on critical inquiry, intellectual challenge and academic freedom which respond to current situations and learners' needs, and which contribute to lifelong educational and socio-economic outcomes;
- maintain and enhance quality support for and services to students;
- maintain and enhance Faculty consultative processes with appropriate client groups, employers, professional bodies, and graduates.
Community Service
The Faculty, through its commitment to community service, will actively foster professional activities which support and make active contributions to improving the communities which it serves. The Faculty will exercise its professional and community leadership through:
- serving the New England, national and international communities;
- serving rural communities through rural education and health initiatives;
- continuing education and professional development;
- maintaining links with graduates, professional bodies and community-based organisations both nationally and internationally;
- promoting Aboriginal health, education and cross-cultural awareness;
- providing community access to resources and expertise from within the Faculty;
- offering consultancy advice and leadership to serve the wider community in order to meet the educational and professional development needs of both public and private sectors; and
- engaging in the ethical application of research to cultural, social and economic purposes.
Working Environment
The Faculty through its commitment to research, teaching and professional service will develop a supportive and inclusive working environment in which maximum opportunities are provided for the professional development of staff. The Faculty will:
- implement an individualised staff development plan;
- involve staff in the consultative decision making processes;
- develop and implement appropriate professional practice and procedures;
- facilitate improvements by staff in teaching and research;
- assist in the implementation of a performance appraisal scheme;
- develop and implement a Faculty workload policy.
