About FEHPS
Located in Australia's oldest regional university, at Armidale in northern New South Wales, this faculty maintains a vibrancy in its approach to education that is difficult to surpass. Such vibrancy is evident in the flexible approaches to learning which are promoted by its academic staff. For around 40 years, it has been a major provider of education by distance means.
"the Armidale-based University of New England (UNE), scored five stars when students were asked to rate their courses for overall satisfaction, teaching quality and acquisition of skills."
Sydney Morning Herald,June 19th, 2002
Having been awarded the maximum number of 10 Citations for 2006, the University of New England has received the ultimate accolade in this year's Carrick Citations - an initiative of the Australian Government to promote and reward excellence in university teaching.
- This tradition continues and it has been augmented by other forms of delivery which include multimedia and Internet presentations, videoconferencing, in-country delivery of courses and visits by academics to diverse work sites for intensive courses.
- Residential schools have been a part of the traditional delivery mode in this faculty. However, these are now being made more flexible to minimise the economic costs that are incurred to attended them. In some awards, such residential schools are not compulsory while in others they are presented as a combined experience across the courses in particular awards. With the drawing power of flexible open learning, the population in this faculty consists of approximately 60% of its students studying by distance and 40% studying internally.
- A direct consequence of its diversity and experience in flexible open delivery of learning experiences is the strong attraction to this faculty by international students. Students from Pacific countries, Asian countries, African countries and ,of late, European and American countries have patronised this faculty very successfully. They have taken back to their countries educational experiences and training which have been a major influence in the development of their professional education and training.
- The strong commitment to community service is evidenced by the widespread activity of staff in all areas of the faculty in professional activities within the New England region, elsewhere in Australia and in overseas countries.
- Strong leadership is exhibited in the leadership in editing international and national journals, leadership in national and international conferences and leadership in professional organisations relevant to the areas of the faculty.
- This is a growing faculty to which all interested educational and professional leaders are invited to share and participate. Through an open, transparent approach to education and training, this faculty will achieve its goals for the future.
