Employer of Choice for Women Award 2008
In March 2008 the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) annnounced that the University of New England had once again been recognised as an Employer of Choice for Women. UNE has been recognised for this award continuously since 2002.
In winning this award for 2008 the University had to comply with six new pre-requisites which set new benchmarks for pay equity and paid maternity leave, as well as for the percentage of managers who are women and the availability of part-time working arrangements for female managers.
UNE was one of only 99 organisations to successfully apply for the award under the new pre-requisites (down from 131 the previous year).
Director of EOWA Anna McPhee said, ‘These businesses have moved beyond simply writing policies and providing basic flexibility. For these organisations creating equity is about changing culture, changing expectations, breaking down the outdated myths about women and finally valuing the massive contribution women make to the workplace whether they are working parttime or fulltime, working from home or in the office, starting their careers or nearing retirement.”
Professor Alan Pettigrew, the Vice-Chancellor of UNE, said he was "delighted" about the University's achievement in fostering the careers of its women employees, and pleased that the Agency continued to recognise this.
"The University has a comprehensive approach to ensuring opportunities for women," Professor Pettigrew said. "This relates to recruitment, performance planning and review, and the provision of opportunities for professional development."
