Terms of Reference
Advisory
- To advise and assist the Vice Chancellor on policy, procedures and guidelines with respect to all issues concerning the access, participation and equitable treatment of EEO target groups in employment at the University;
- to monitor the effectiveness of procedures and programs in relation to EEO, affirmative action and anti-discrimination and to make recommendations on these to the Vice-Chancellor;
- to provide advice to the Vice-Chancellor regarding the compliance of University policies and procedures with the spirit and legal provisions of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, the federal Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Act 1999 and other relevant Acts;
- to advise the Vice-Chancellor on promotion of or impediments to equal opportunity at the University;
- to consider and report on any matter referred to the Committee by the Vice-Chancellor; and
- to ensure that recommendations and/or decisions of the Committee embody appropriate attention to quality assurance and are consistent with the UNE Strategic Plan and other relevant UNE Plans.

Membership
- Employment Equity & Diversity Officer;
- Director of Oorala Aboriginal Centre or nominee;
- Chair or nominee of each of each School Equity Committee;
- Chair or nominee of the Directorates' Equity Committee;
- one member elected by and from the members of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) — UNE Branch;
- one member elected by and from the members of the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) — UNE Branch; and
- one representative elected by and from the Heads of Residences.
- Student Access & Equity Officer or other nominee from the V-C's Student Access & Equity Advisory Committee
The Committee can co-opt where needed any members required to achieve or maintain appropriate gender representation, where the membership does not include at least two women and two men. The Committee can invite individuals to provide additional appropriate expertise as necessary.
Elected members will hold office for a two-year period and may serve a maximum of two consecutive terms. In the event that an elected member vacates office within six months of their election, then the next ranked candidate will be invited to serve. Otherwise an election will be conducted by the appropriate body for a replacement to serve the remainder of the term.
Frequency of Meetings
The Committee meets at least four times per year.
Self-Review
Once in every twelve-month period, the Committee shall devote at least part of one meeting to a review of its policies, practices and procedures over the preceding 12 months.

These Terms of Reference were accepted by the Vice-Chancellor's EEO Committee
on Wednesday, 19 March 2008 and further amended to include representation from the V-C's Student Access & Equity Advisory Committee in May 2008.
