The following questions are designed to assist you choose the right teaching course or program of study.

1. Do you hold a Degree (not a teaching degree)?

No. Go to the BEd (Primary), BEd (Early Childhood), BTch (Early Childhood), and BTch Combined Degrees on the undergraduate page.

Yes. Go to BTch(Primary), BTch(Secondary), MTch(Secondary), MTchSec Upgrade Program, GradDipEd, GradCert, GradDip, Masters level under the Preservice Program on this page.

2. Do you have a Degree and a teaching qualification?

Yes. Do you want to complete postgraduate studies in Education coursework? Or would you prefer a research program (MEd(Hons), MEdAdmin(Hons), EdD, PhD, ProfD)?

Preservice Program

The following programs are for graduates who hold a relevant degree and are are seeking a teaching qualification.

Postgraduate Preservice Teacher Education Programs

  • Bachelor of Teaching (Primary)
  • Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) (for continuing students only)
  • Graduate Diploma in Education
  • Master of Teaching (Primary)
  • Master of Teaching (Secondary)
  • Master of Teaching Upgrade Program

    • For those wishing specifically to upgrade their teaching qualification from a previously held two or three-year teacher training course (or equivalent), we offer at a postgraduate level:

  • Bachelor of Education (BEd)

    • For teachers wanting to develop their careers, who already hold appropriate teaching qualifications, we offer a range of postgraduate coursework and research programs:

    Postgraduate Coursework Studies in Education

    Graduate Certificate:

    The Graduate Certificate of Tertiary Education (GCTE) is a new cross-institutional course for academic staff across the sector. It replaces the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education. UNE’s core unit and elective unit within the GCTE are available from 2009. The cross-institutional GCTE units will be available from 2010.     Graduate Diploma:

  • Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Teaching English to Speakers of Languages Other than  English) 

    • Master of Education:

    On the linked course information pages you will find course rules outlined, plus a Program of Study.

  • Master of Education (MEd)

    • A coursework program with opportunities for specialisation from other Schools within the University.

  • Master of Educational Administration (MEdAdmin)

    • A coursework program with opportunities for specialisation from other Schools within the University.

  • Master of Education in International Schooling, Education and Development

    • Postgraduate Research

  • Master of Education with Honours - successful applicants to this program will have access to the Research Training Scheme (RTS). The Master of Education with Honours program is perhaps the best pathway to our doctoral programs.
  • Masters of Education (Honours Early Childhood) 
  • Doctor of Education (EdD)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • Professional Doctorate (ProfD)
