Mathematics Education
The Mathematics Education team members in the department are committed to a constructivist approach to learning and hence seek to optimise the amount of hands-on and workshop experience provided for students in our units of study. In the design of our units we seek also, within time and space constraints, to provide for the variety of learning styles found in the average class. Hence, there is typically a mixture of lecture, seminar and workshop activities in course presentation.
Much of our teaching and research in maths ed is a team effort to which we bring many years of experience. We see this to be an advantage to both staff and students as we each have different strengths to offer, as do our students. We all enjoy mathematics and have a strong commitment to providing positive mathematical experiences for our students and fostering integration with other strands of school curricula. Unit evaluations from both internal and external students have indicated considerable success in these areas.
