University of New England School Drama Prize (UNESDP)

The UNESDP is held annually with the purpose of encouraging young playwrights in New South Wales.

Open to all students in years 10, 11 & 12 

 

Three winners will be awarded prize money and have their monologues performed by Theatre Studies UNE. All finalists will be awarded Certificates of Distinction.

Prizes:

Original monologue:
1st prize $200
2nd prize $150
3rd prize $100

Note:
The UNESDP is a prize awarded for a written monologue, not for a performance of a monologue.

The three prize winners will be sent a certificate and a cheque through the mail.  The winning monologues will be performed by Theatre Studies as part of the ‘Favourite Shorts’ festival in Armidale.  All students, their families and friends, school principals and teachers are welcome to attend.

It would be appreciated if you could inform your students of these changes, as some parents may have planned to travel to Armidale for the Gala Evening on the 16th May 2008.

Announcement of Prize Winners:

Gala Evening
6:00 pm Friday, 16th May 2008
Arts Theatre, UNE

Winners will be announced at a Gala Evening to be held at 6:00 pm on Friday 16th May 2008, at the Arts Theatre, University of New England, Armidale, (opposite the tennis courts). The three winning monologues will be presented by Theatre Studies, UNE. All finalists, their families, friends, teachers and other school representatives are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.


Conditions of Entry

1. The written monologue should be designed for a solo performance of 6-8 minutes duration (approximately three to four A4 pages of 12 point font). There should be no other actors on or off stage, no accompanying music, and no sound effects.
2. The subject matter or theme of the monologue is not restricted. It is therefore open to students and teachers to select the theme of the monologue.
3. The number of entries from each school and from each student is not restricted.
4. The UNESDP is open to all students in Years 10, 11, and 12, residing in NSW.
5. Students from both government and non-government schools are eligible to enter.
6. Submissions will not be returned to the participating schools. Entrants are therefore encouraged to keep a copy of their monologue.
7. Each monologue submitted must be recent and it must be an unaided, original work created entirely by the entrant.
8. UNE automatically becomes the copyright owner of all written monologues submitted to the UNESDP. The written monologue, photographs and audio-visual images may be reproduced by UNE and any person authorised by UNE by any process, electronic or otherwise. If reproduced the entrant will always be acknowledged.
9. The written monologue must not be reproduced by the entrant without UNE’s written permission except that UNE permission will not be required where the entrant wishes to use it for their own purposes including public orHSC drama performances or inclusion in student portfolios.
