Sylvia is a writer, cultural historian and former actor. She also works as a reviewer, editor and manuscript assessor. Her research interests include feminist auto/biography, Australian women's writing, and theories of sexuality. Her book, Passionate Friends, based on her doctoral research, was short-listed for the 2002 ISAA (Independent Scholars' Association of Australia) Book Prize.

She is the current holder of the C. H. Currey Memorial Fellowship at the State Library of New South Wales, researching and writing the biography of Ida Leeson, Mitchell Librarian 1932-1946.
