Graduate Certificate in Writing


Course description

The course will suit people from diverse backgrounds who wish to gain advanced skills in writing for professional purposes. It explores principles and practices of writing that are relevant to many areas of professional work, academic study and community life.

• Students complete four units (each of 6 credit points) for a total 24 credit points at 300 or 400 level.

• The course is normally taken on a part-time basis over two semesters.

• The course is open to both fee-paying and HECS students.

• Please Note: 300 and 400 level units are usually offered on rotation once every two years. It is advisable to check with the School regarding when specific units are scheduled.

Mode of delivery

The course is offered in both internal (on-campus) and external (off-campus) mode.

This allows maximum flexibility in study arrangements.

Course structure and unit choices

Students select at least two units from Group A (all in this Group are highly recommended). They also select no more than two units from Group B.

For units being offered in 2008, the semester in which they are scheduled is shown in brackets after the unit title below.

Group A

ENCO 306 / 406 Writing for Work: Styles and Contexts (Semester 1, 2008)
This unit explores the principles and techniques of professional writing, with practical guidance in genres of writing that range from organisational communication to arts-based writing (eg reviewing) and writing for radio.

ECT 303 / 403 Research in Writing (Not offered in 2008)
The unit enhances students' research skills for diverse writing genres and contexts.

ENGL 304 / 404 Critical and Creative Writing Through Literature (Not offered in 2008)
This unit promotes critical reflection upon the processes involved in reading and writing. It encourages students to analyse their own reading experience in relation to theories concerning the reader's reception and the writer's production of texts.

ENCO 329 / 429 Publishing and Editing (Semester 2, 2008)
This unit enables students to enhance their skills in academic, professional and creative writing by gaining practical and theoretical knowledge of editing and publishing.

Admission requirements

For admission to this Graduate Certificate, the requirement is that applicants have successfully completed a Bachelor degree at UNE, or a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at another university or institution recognised by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences for this purpose. Alternatively, applicants may provide evidence of successful tertiary study and relevant professional experience, to show to the satisfaction of the Faculty that they are adequately prepared for the candidature.
