Advanced Standing Policy
1. The Advanced Standing Policy of the Faculty of Economics, Business and Law conforms to the University's Policy on Advanced Standing and the Australian Vice-Chancellor's Committee (AVCC) Credit Transfer Principles.
2. Candidates seeking professional accreditation from a professional body (eg, CPA Australia, ICAA) must seek advice from that body as to whether any advanced standing granted by the Faculty will satisfy their accreditation requirements. The Faculty accepts no responsibility if the advanced standing granted to candidates does not meet the accreditation requirements of professional bodies.
3. Advanced standing may only be granted on the basis of units completed not more than 10 years prior to the academic year for which the advanced standing is sought.
4. The units for which advanced standing is granted must be such that they have reasonable correspondence to units offered for the course. Unspecified credit appropriate to the course may be granted where no comparable unit exists at this University but where the learning is still relevant and at an appropriate level in terms of the specific course. The maximum number of credit points that may be counted shall be determined as follows:
(a) A candidate may be granted advanced standing for tertiary study at this University or any other institution approved by the Faculty, for up to 67 per cent of the requirements for an undergraduate qualification, or for each component in the case of combined courses, offered by the Faculty, and
(b) A candidate may be granted advanced standing for tertiary study at this University or any other institution approved by the Faculty, for up to 67 per cent of the requirements for a major or specialist stream within an undergraduate course of the Faculty, and
(c) There shall be no advanced standing granted towards postgraduate courses of the Faculty for units that have been counted towards a previous qualification, and
(d) There shall be no maximum to the advanced standing which may be granted for units completed at the University of New England that have not been counted towards a previous qualification.
5. A candidate who has been granted advanced standing towards the Bachelor of Agribusiness, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Economics, or the Bachelor of Financial Administration for units passed elsewhere shall pass at least two units at 200 level and at least two units at 300 level from units offered by the Schools of the Faculty.
6. A candidate who has been granted advanced standing towards the Bachelor of Agricultural Economics for units passed elsewhere shall pass at least two units at 300 level and at least two units at 400 level, excluding the Research Seminar, ECON 496, from units offered by the Schools of the Faculty.
7. Advanced standing shall not be granted for units passed elsewhere after enrolment at the University of New England, if the candidate has not previously obtained the permission of the Faculty to enrol in them. (Candidates are referred to the Faculty Policy on Permission to Enrol Elsewhere).
8. Subject to such restrictions as may be specified in the rules governing each course offered by the Faculty, the Faculty will consider applications for advanced standing on the basis of the following at a standard equivalent to the unit for which advanced standing is being sought:
(i) courses provided by professional bodies, enterprises, private educational institutions and/or other providers recognised by the Faculty;
(ii) learning from work or other forms of practical experience, subject to the provisions of appropriate documentation;
(iii) experiential learning.
All applicants for advanced standing on the basis of part 8 (iii) above must successfully complete a challenge examination. Challenge examinations may also be prescribed for those seeking advanced standing on the basis of applications under parts 8 (i) and (ii) above at the discretion of the Faculty.
9. On the recommendations of the relevant Head of School, and where advanced standing is not available, the Faculty may grant exemption from a particular unit on the basis of prior learning as defined in Part 8 above. Such exemption will not count as advanced standing towards an award of the Faculty.
10. Applicants for advanced standing on the basis of prior learning as defined in Part 8 (i) - (iii) above shall only be eligible to receive advanced standing for designated units offered by the University of New England as listed in the Faculty of Economics, Business and Law Schedule of Units.
