GENERAL STAFF COMMUNICATIONS GROUP.

In May this year the Centre for Higher Education Management and Policy carried out a survey of UNE staff to determine feedback on communication and consultative processes within UNE. Generally speaking, the survey indicated a lack of satisfaction by staff with their degree of involvement in consultation and communication processes.

While the survey results indicate that consultation and communication at the local level is usually quite high, satisfaction is considered to be decreased with the level of institutional hierarchy and is lowest at the University wide level.

In addition to general communications, the survey also identified that while staff had a preference to more participation regarding future directions of the University, there also remains an important role for unions with regard to the negotiation of terms and conditions of employment.

It is important to establish appropriate mechanisms to improve and ensure necessary communications throughout the University. While some staff may not wish to directly participate in such processes it is necessary for each of us has the opportunity to keep up to date regarding the University's future directions and any changes to terms and conditions of employment that may be proposed.

In order to improve the level of participation of staff in discussions of future directions and communicate matters regarding terms and conditions of employment a staff nominated General Staff Communications Group (GSCG) has been established. Membership was finalised this morning.
