EB'99 Academic Staff

Correspondence

Initiation of Bargaining Period

4 August 1999

Dr Herman Beyersdorf
President
UNE NTEU Branch
C/- University of New England

Dear Dr Beyersdorf,

The University is in receipt of the NTEU log of claims for the third round enterprise bargaining at UNE.

The University notes the NTEU's log of claims contains matters in respect of both general and academic staff. As communicated earlier, the University will only
recognise those unions with constitutional coverage on matters to be negotiated for and on behalf of general staff.

Under the Australian Workplace Relations Act 1996, once a party has initiated a bargaining period in accordance with s170MI and s170MJ, a bargaining period
begins at the end of 7 days after the day on which notice was given. The University notes in your correspondence the NTEU's wish to have a meeting in the week
commencing 9 August.

I propose that an initial meeting be held between the NTEU and representatives of management on Monday 9 August. That meeting would be used as an
opportunity for the University to gain a further understanding of the matters contained within the NTEU log of claims.

The University then suggests a further meeting be held in the week commencing 23 August to discuss negotiating protocols and a schedule for enterprise bargaining.

As I will be away from the University to meet long-standing commitments from the 5 August to 13 August, could you please liaise with the Industrial Relations and
Workplace Change Unit on a suitable time and place for the initial meeting as suggested above.

Yours sincerely,

Brian Stoddart
Pro Vice Chancellor (Research & External)
