Journey Through Time- 1984

Know something we don't? If you have any information regarding this year, including photos, please contact epc@une.edu.au

Name of the year: The year it snowed dangerously

Why the year was so named: In 1984, Armidale received the most snow it had for many years. Students were seen walking knee deep in snow on the Consett davis playing fields; all transport links were cut to town and the university had to close down for a few days. The specific name was a pun based on the controversial 1983 film The year of living dangerously, which reportedly had a big impact on the students.

Significant events of that year:

  • Largest snow fall in a long period of time - it even snowed in Toowoomba and Stanthorpe.
