Study Facilities
Study Bedrooms
Every student's bedroom is a quiet and relaxed study area. Each student study bedroom has plenty of shelf space and a huge desk. Most students set up their computer, or a spot for their laptop, make a folder or box for each subject and stick a calender of assignment due dates on their wall. The bed is also a comfy place to catch up on some lecture notes or some class readings. The courtyard is also a great place to sit in the shade, or on a towel in the sun, and get some study done. One of the greatest things about College is that people can study together. It isn't hard to find another student doing the same subjects and to look over assignments together. Nobody feels lonely or isolated because there is plenty of support and help at Duval College.
"At Duval, the 7 medical students live in the same block. We can just call down the hallway to ask study questions." - Matt, Bachelor of Medicine.
Tutorial Room
The ‘tute room’ is just like a classroom. During the day students may use the room for group study sessions. Each weeknight the room is booked for a different faculty. For each faculty the Academic Mentor holds study sessions focusing on certain assignments, essay techniques, anti-plagiarism and more. Students can study in groups, with the support and help from their mentor when they need it. When a big assignment is coming up the AM will hold a session on techniques for that particular assignment. However, they will not do your assignment for you! In the weeks leading up to exams the AM will teach study and time management skills and offer support and help with any questions. These sessions are mostly designed to help new students, but AMs are always availabel to help with questions from any member of college.
The tute room can also be used for college meetings (eg. Ball Committee meetings) and is used by conference groups.
Meeting Room: The Duval Meeting Room, is mostly used for College meetings and Conferences.
Computer Room
Duval College has the most computers per student. All computers are modern with high speed internet connections and all relevant programs. There is also a colour printer/scanner and photocopier in the computer room. The room has reverse cycle air conditioning so that people can study and do assignments in a cozy, comfortable environment.
Library
Duval College has a very small library and an annually appointed librarian. It stocks novels and has many useful textbooks for a range of courses. It is a quiet place in which students can study in peace. The Duval Library is a useful resource, but UNE's Dixson Library is an impressive reserve.
Thesis Room: The Thesis Room is a computer and study room designated to students doing postgraduate studies. This means that it is a quiet and undisturbed environment allowing them to concentrate solely on their thesis or PHD writings. There is a Senior Common Room member who mentors and assists Thesis students from the earliest stages of thesis writing. This is particularly helpful when proof reading materials!
Dining Hall
The dining hall is also a good place to study. It is quiet during the day and, with plenty of study room on the long tables, big groups can easily study together.
The Might As Well Monday study program involves all students bringing their books, notes, and their laptops to the dining hall to study together. Mentors are on hand to help with any questions and to hand out m&ms to really help the brain get working. It’s a good opportunity to get out of your room and study with friends.
