Senior Common Room Constitution

DUVAL COLLEGE SENIOR COMMON ROOM CONSTITUTION (revised June 1983)

1. Functions of the Senior Common Room Members of the Senior Common Room have a strong belief in the Collegiate system and feel a strong commitment to Duval College. The functions of the Senior Common Room include the promotion of, and active participations in the following areas: Academic Active support of academic and intellectual pursuits within the College including individual and group tutorial assistance. Social Active promotion of a social support system within the College; for example, support of student welfare and social activities of the College. Cultural Active participation in the cultural life of the College within the context of the University and of the wider community. In order to carry out these functions, members are expected to participate in fund raising activities.

2. Officers The D.C.S.C.R. Executive shall consist of a President, a Treasurer and a Secretary. The President shall have been a member of the D.C.S.C.R. for at least twelve months prior to his nomination for the position. The President shall be elected at the last full meeting of the D.C.S.C.R. of the preceding year. The Treasurer shall have been a member of the D.C.S.C.R. for at least twelve months prior to his nomination for the position. The treasurer shall be elected at the last full meeting of the D.C.S.C.R. of the preceding year. The Secretary's position is open to any member of the D.C.S.C.R.. The Secretary will be elected at the last full meeting of the D.C.S.C.R. of the year of office. Other offices of the D.C.S.C.R. may be created as may be deemed necessary.

3. Membership Categories The membership of the Senior Common Room should be sufficiently broad so as to further the goals (functions) of the senior Common Room. The College should be able to expect active participation of the Senior Common Room members in College activities, (academic, social or cultural), or be able to acknowledge promotion of the College both within the University and the wider community. Ordinary members Ex Officio: resident tutors, Tutors, Senior Resident Fellow, Academic Co-ordinator, (Dues). Nominated: To be nominated by two other members. (Dues). Honorary members By invitation of the Senior Common Room. These individuals should have special skills and/or long term commitment to Duval. (No dues). Visiting Members Visitors to the University. It is not envisaged that these members will have voting rights. (Dues).

4. Membership Sub-Committee of the Senior Common Room The sub-committee shall consist of five members with a quorum being three members: The Principal of the College Past president of the Senior Common Room. The current president of the Senior Common Room (chairperson). Two members of the Senior Common Room, one of which should be (normally) an ex officio member. All membership matters are to be referred to this sub-committee. The sub-committee will move recommendations on all membership matters to the Senior Common Room for subsequent ratification. The limitations on nominated Senior Common Room membership will be twenty memberships. Joint membership will be counted as one membership.

5. Meetings The D.C.S.C.R. meeting shall normally be chaired by the President. There will be at least SIX full meetings of the D.C.S.C.R. annually. Meetings will be convened by the President of the D.C.S.C.R. or by a minimum of three members of the D.C.S.C.R.. Full meetings of the D.C.S.C.R. will consist of at least EIGHT members, except for those meetings which are concerned with the election of members of the Executive or with constitutional changes where the quorum shall be FIFTEEN members
